Expanded Functions Dental Assistant

Reports to: Practice Manager, Regional Manager

Key Partnerships: Operations, Clinical, Support Center

Department: Operations

Salary: $24-26/hr (based on experience)

Classification: Non-Exempt

Status: Full-Time

About this role:

The Expanded Functions Dental Assistant is responsible for supporting the Dentist and providing treatment to patients primarily in an emergent care setting. The EFDA will work to assist the Dentist, coordinate and work with other Assistants to ensure an efficient office flow, and work with our front office staff to ensure the patient's needs are being met and are providing everyone a reason to smile! This role requires a positive, professional, and responsible individual who takes initiative. This individual is a team player and brings their best to our office to achieve the best outcomes for our patients.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Setting up and sterilizing exam and treatment rooms
  • Preparation of appropriate instrumentation, equipment, and materials for each procedure
  • Sterilization of dental instrumentation and following cross-contamination standards according to regulations and practice standards
  • Perform efficient and accurate procedures to maintain the schedule and patient flow
  • Warm and welcoming invitation of patients into the triage area
  • Capture and assessment of patient vitals, including heart rate, blood pressure, and blood-oxygen saturation
  • Entry and maintenance of electronic patient records with precision, including medical history and proposed treatment
  • Effective exposure of prescribed digital radiographs, based on the patient indication of the trouble area
  • Assist dentists with a variety of treatment procedures including Fillings, RCTs, Cording Packing, Crown Seat, Denture adjustments, Extractions, and other complex treatments.
  • Providing teeth polishing and sealant placement procedure (with required certifications)
  • Familiar with sedation treatments, including treatment information, post-care, and monitoring. (Additional training provided)
  • The capability of maintaining rapport with multiple patients at once during times of high demand
  • Take direction from the doctor(s) and/or hygienist(s), assist them with all dental procedures, anticipate their needs, and perform patient oral evaluations
  • Maintenance of dental equipment and facility according to manufacturer and practice standards
  • Discussing treatment options, importance, and follow-up recommended care
  • Supporting with patient treatment appointment scheduling as requested
  • Creating positive and uplifting patient environments through patient engagement before, during, and after visits
  • Guiding patients and responsible parties through post-care instructions
  • Successful completion of internal training programs
  • Educating and developing patient relationships
  • Understanding of and adherence to HIPAA guidelines
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Proven experience as an Expanded Function Dental Assistant 1-2 years of experience
  • Active Indiana Dental Radiographer License
  • Knowledge of dental instrumentation and sterilization methods
  • Understanding of health and safety regulations, including but not limited to OSHA and HIPAA
  • The capability of comforting and empathizing with patients in need
  • Aptitude with digital radiography and electronic health records
  • Sealant Placement, Nitrous Monitoring, and Coronal Polishing Certifications preferred (if 2 years of experience, the company provides courses)
  • RCT, Cord Packing, Denture Adjustments, and Crown Seat experience

Schedule and Location:

  • Shifts and locations can change based on the primary location hired for

Work Environment:

  • Environmentally controlled dental office environment
  • Fast-paced environment with occasional high-pressure situations
  • Frequent interaction with a diverse population including team members, providers, patients, and members of the public

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, lifting, and carrying
  • Occasional sitting, writing, typing, grasping and speaking
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Frequent use of computers, and various dental equipment


Schedule & Location:

Same Day Dental - South
Days scheduled can vary based upon the need - rotating weekends/shifts based upon availability.
