The Home Educator is responsible for providing home instructions to parents using the program’s research-based curriculum for children, in-utero to 3 years old to a case load of 10 families. Works in partnership with families to conduct individualized weekly home visits and two group socials per month. Screens and assesses each child using appropriate screening/assessment tools. Engages parents of various cultural backgrounds in their child’s education, including fathers. Delivers a comprehensive service model to the enrolled families including community referrals, family goal setting, health, mental health, and disabilities services.

This position is full-time with full benefits located in Santa Maria and will serve the Santa Maria and Cuyama areas. Position starts out between $18.20 - $19.75 per hour.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned. 

• Plans semi-monthly parent-child socialization at a center or community setting. Involves parents in planning the activities for the socialization and encourages their participation.
• Works with parents/guardians who are the primary educator of their child, on a scheduled, weekly basis in the family’s home. 
• Prepares all activities and materials for home visit lessons and is organized, well prepared and punctual for home visits.
• Prepares curriculum materials for pregnant women or infants/toddlers in alignment with curriculum guidelines. 
• Encourages parents to observe their children and teaches parents about child development through the observations and home visit curriculum topics. 
• Makes special efforts to include fathers.
• Assists children with self-care needs such as tooth brushing, diapering and toileting when needed.
• Carries out a bilingual, multicultural anti-bias curriculum designed to meet children’s developmental needs within program guidelines.
• Provides other support services and referrals for families to help meet their needs or interests on an individual basis.
• Plans and carries out transition activities for children who are entering or leaving the option/program.
• Maintains narrative records in partnership with parents on each child related to their development, including anecdotal records.
• Maintains the confidentiality of records and information of enrolled families.
• Completes required paper and electronic records in a timely manner.
• Assumes responsibility for maintenance of required records including a monthly report, child/family files and portfolios.
• Attends or IFSP (Individual Family Service Plan) meetings for children with special needs with consultants, agency personnel, and parents as required.
• Helps organize parent committee meetings and encourages parents to attend other workshops of interest to parents.
• Offers each parent/family the opportunity to identify and work toward their goals as part of a Family Partnership Agreement.
• Supports families in obtaining, or following up on, any needed health, mental health, nutrition, dental or disabilities services for their child.
• Operates a motor vehicle daily to make home visits and to transport families to meetings, socializations, or appointments.
• Participates in and contributes to regular center staff meetings, home base curriculum meetings and family service meetings as assigned.
• Participates with supervisors and managers in the evaluation and ongoing improvement of the program’s effectiveness.
• Must be available for pre-arranged evening home visits or meetings, or weekend meetings or special events to meet the needs of working families.
• Functions as a positive team member. Communicates effectively with families and co-workers.
• Performs other comparable related duties as required.

Education and/or Experience:

Home Educator I: 12 units in Early Childhood Education/Child Development in core course or hold Associate Teacher permit or Child Development Associate permit. 6 units in infant/toddler development are required.

Home Educator II: Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education/Child Development or a related field and eligible for a Child Development Teacher permit or higher from California Commission on Teacher Credentialing with three semester units in supervised field experience. 6 units in infant/toddler development are required.

Home Educator II: Bachelor’s Degree or higher with 12 units of Early Childhood Education/Child Development and eligible for a Child Development Master Teacher permit or higher from California Commission on Teacher Credentialing with three semester units in supervised field experience and one year or experience as an Early Childhood Teacher. 6 units in infant/toddler development are required.

Computer Skills: To perform this position successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software; and Word Processing software.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Obtain and maintain a current CD permit for position held. Must obtain and maintain a First Aid and CPR card. Valid California driver’s license with acceptable driving record as determined by the Agency and current insurance required.

Other Skills and Abilities: Experience working with children with disabilities desirable; Bilingual required (English/Spanish). Ability to speak Mixteco is highly desirable. 

Other Qualifications: Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination. Obtain a tuberculosis clearance and clear Community Care Licensing fingerprint process. Provide verification of State required vaccines upon hire for: Influenza (from August 1 to December 1), Pertussis, and Measles. Acceptable verifications include immunization record and physician statement. Exceptions to vaccinations: Flu can be waived by completing annual waiver.
