Commonwealth of VA Careers is Hiring a Director of Development, CALS Near Virginia, VA

Job Description

The Director of Development is an experienced development professional who leads and manages the development organization for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). The Director, working closely with the Assistant Dean of Advancement for CALS, the Associate Deans of the college, senior administration, and faculty, will be responsible for the planning and implementation of fundraising efforts from all private sources to support current operations, endowment, and other capital purposes for all academic units and all aspects of Virginia Cooperative Extension. He/She will fulfill these duties under the direction of, and in close cooperation with both the college’s Advancement office and the university’s central Advancement office, reporting to the Assistant Dean of Advancement of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
This position must:
- Travel regionally and nationally for the purposes of conducting field research, cultivation, and solicitation.
- Have strong motivation and the ability to work as a team member within a complex organization requiring collaboration, teamwork, and communication.
- Be capable of motivating volunteers, professional staff and donors.
- Demonstrate the ability to lead a program including goal setting, evaluation, and planning.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate with key faculty and administrative professionals as well as stakeholders of the college and Virginia Cooperative Extension.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree with extensive experience or Master's degree.
- Successful track record in fundraising, preferably within a university setting.
- Experience supervising and leading a team.
- Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

- Previous major gift fundraising experience within a university and cooperative extension setting.
- Knowledge of the organization, administration, and funding sources and structures of Virginia Cooperative Extension.
- Experience fostering personal and professional relationships in both the agriculture and life sciences industry and cooperative extension clientele.
- Experience with volunteer board development

Regional and national travel required for the purposes of conducting field research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, which may include overnights and weekends.
Must have the ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation.
Ability to work nights and weekends, and participation in college or university programs when possible.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
