About the Department:

The Office of Admissions recruits and enrolls applicants to George Mason University, including freshmen, transfers, graduate, and non-degree students.

About the Position:

The Associate Director of Admissions plans, coordinates, and evaluates recruitment activities for undergraduates to align with the Admissions Office and institutional operations, policies, procedures, and goals. This position leads recruitment activities for the Northern Virginia region and for all in-state Direct Admission Partner schools. The Associate Director supports recruitment activities for freshman, transfer, graduate, and non-degree students. Additional responsibilities may include serving as a liaison to other Admissions teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the Office of Admissions primary point of contact for all school districts participating in the Direct Admissions program;
  • Works with leadership to develop and execute a local market recruitment plan that compliments Direct Admission initiatives, but ensures a presence for the entirety of the region;
  • Manages the Direct Admissions initiative: Receives directives regarding schools to collaborate with and the enrollment objectives, then develops the approach to reach those goals with input from leadership, as needed;
  • Serves as the contact for at least five Direct Admissions Schools: Reads applications for assigned schools; serves as the primary point of contact for school administration and school counselors; represents George Mason University at all college nights, financial aid nights, and any other event hosted by the school(s); partners with the Office of Student Financial Aid and Financial Well-Being to provide resources for students, families, and schools, including programming/events and materials;
  • Works with the Associate Director of Events & Programs to plan and implement all on-campus events related to Direct Admissions;
  • Serves as the Direct Admissions expert in the Division of Enrollment Management;
  • Leads and manages technology related to Direct Admissions: Application Review Tool within Salesforce, managing submitted applications and making admission decisions. Makes recommendations for new dashboards, as needed. Partners with the Admissions Technology team to manage the transcript upload process;
  • Trains the Office of Admissions staff to answer questions regarding the Direct Admissions program from other schools, families, etc.;
  • Counselor of the Day and Informational Officer of the Day: Serves as the on-call person to meet with prospective students and families who walk into the office. Serves as the contact person for the day, handling any escalations from the front-line service team;
  • Conducts general information sessions to prospective students and their families on academics, campus life, and how to apply to George Mason University;
  • Attends and actively participates in all assigned Office of Admissions events;
  • Participates in the development of a comprehensive recruitment strategy, particularly crafting and implementing plans for assigned projects, including autonomously directing and delegating tasks to staff members;
  • Directs development of a recruitment strategy for assigned geographic areas, tracking applications and yield for assigned schools/regions, and using data for future travel planning;
  • Maintains an active and assertive presence in the assigned geographic regions and oversees all recruitment activities for the Relationship Management team in Northern Virginia; and
  • Responsible for hiring, training, managing, and evaluating direct reports.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Considerable progressive Admissions experience;
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience;
  • Experience working with a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software;
  • Knowledge and clear understanding of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the handling of personal and confidential information;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the core principles of marketing, recruiting, admissions, and financial aid;
  • Outstanding organizational, technical, analytical, and project management skills;
  • Demonstrated skill in effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication;
  • Proficient in the use of general office technology with the willingness and ability to learn new systems;
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise substantial attention to detail;
  • Ability to effectively document policies and procedures;
  • Ability to effectively organize and implement programs;
  • Ability to effectively manage change;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully as part of a team; interact and work with students, faculty, staff, and administrators of diverse backgrounds; and
  • Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator’s license that meets all of GMU’s requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason’s Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver’s licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related field;
  • Experience working with Ellucian Banner;
  • Experience with Salesforce; and
  • Bilingual.
