The University of Virginia Division of Student Affairs is seeking a talented and creative Assistant Director of Finance to join our finance team and steward approximately $50 million in professionally managed Division budgets and about $3 million in student budgets.

The Division of Student Affairs works for and alongside students to promote the intellectual, cultural, personal, and social development of students while enhancing their physical and psychological well-being. The main functional areas include Student Health & Wellness, the University Career Center, the Office of African American Affairs, Student Engagement, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Multicultural Student Services, Newcomb Event Planning, Rotunda Event Services, Orientation & New Student Programs, and Judicial Affairs.
Your role as an Assistant Director would be comprised of two main working areas:
- Financial Management and Operations Specialist
- Budget Planning and Monitoring: Update and maintain budget projections in Excel, Adaptive and Workday. With the Associate Director, work with UVA’s Office of Financial Planning & Analysis (OFP&A) to stay up to date, respond to issues, and submit all budgets for all deadlines. Prepare and edit scenario analysis models to support Division decision-making. Your insights will guide strategic resource allocation, ensuring the effective use of funds across various operating and non-operating Division budgets, including Central UVA Source, Student Fee, Gift, and Grant-funded budgets.
- Workday & UBI Expertise: Be an expert on Workday (Financials, HCM, and Adaptive Planning), and all external reporting modules (UBI/QilkSense). Play a role in Workday Approval and Account Certification Process. Your knowledge will streamline processes, improve budget projection models, and elevate our reporting capabilities.
- Enhance Financial Reporting: Collaborate with our reporting team to assess, summarize, and interpret financial data. You will play a crucial role in presenting meaningful insights to Division leadership, UVA Finance, Advancement, and other stakeholders, helping them understand the story behind the numbers.
- Operational Support and Compliance: Ensure compliance with University and State financial policies. You will also assist in administrative tasks, transaction approvals, and managing Gifts and Grants processes.
- Administration and Operations Role:
- Process Innovation and Automation: Lead the charge in designing and implementing new, efficient processes.
- Training and Development: Develop and implement training programs for staff and students on aspects of Workday and other systems, using your expertise to guide others in navigating new systems and processes.
- Strategic Planning Support: Provide crucial data and analysis for strategy planning, such as personnel management and fundraising planning.
- System Transition Leadership: Play a key role in transitioning to a new system for student budget management and processing. You will be instrumental in developing processes for training, payment processing, and compliance.
Minimum Requirements- Significant Experience: We seek a candidate with at least seven years of progressively responsible experience in financial management and administration.
- Financial Expertise: Strong financial acumen, budget development, accounting, and financial analysis skills.
- Technological Proficiency: High level of comfort with financial and personnel management systems such as Workday, and MS Office products, especially a mastery of Excel and the ability to manipulate large datasets and compile meaningful financial reports.
- Analytical and Critical Thinking Skills: Demonstrated ability in problem-solving and preparation of data-driven analyses and reports with degrees of detail appropriate for different audiences.
- Adaptability and Organizational Skills: Demonstrated ability to work effectively in complex environments. Excellent organizational skills and work ethic; adept at managing competing priorities.
- Independence and Collaboration: Resourcefulness and a collaborative spirit are key. Must be capable of independent research and continuous self-improvement, dedicated to the growth of both self and colleagues.
- Communication and Leadership Abilities: Outstanding oral and written communication skills. Effective communication and negotiation abilities. Able to build trust with key stakeholders including students and student organizations. Excellent leadership, team-building, and interpersonal skills.
- Education: A Bachelor's degree is required.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience in Higher Education: Prior experience in an academic or higher education setting is highly advantageous, including experience with Workday.

Salary Range: $90,000.00-$110,000.00 commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a hybrid position eligible for some remote work after an initial training period.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor's degree in relevant subject
Experience: At least seven years of experience in a financial discipline, likely with supervisory experience. 11 years of relevant/finance experience accepted in lieu of degree.
Licensure: May hold CPA or other advanced financial certification.
