Description
The Department for Public Health, Division of Laboratory Services, Preparedness Section is dedicated to improving health and safety of Kentucky citizens through prevention, promotion and protection. This Laboratory Technician III position provides the individual with the opportunity to perform duties that support critical, life-saving testing for various viral and bacterial diseases, as well as heritable disorders. This Section supports the vital testing that DLS completes for submitting facilities across the state to ensure requested and mandated testing services are provided to all citizens living in the Commonwealth.
The Division strives to allow individuals to enhance their laboratory skills through advanced trainings in state–of-the-art technologies. Each month, thousands of specimens are submitted to DLS and we are responsible for providing testing following strict regulations and stringent turn-around-times. This testing allows for treatment to begin as soon as possible in the affected individual's lives, thereby eliminating or reducing the effects of the infections which could include permanent physical/mental disability or death.
The Division is seeking a Laboratory Technician III that will learn to receive, assess and distribute specimen samples submitted to DLS. In addition, this position will also be responsible for shipping out supplies needed for sample collection to state submitting facilities. Other duties will include support for the scientific testing being performed by the testing staff. The candidate for this position should be a fast learner, enthusiastic, motivated to do an excellent job, have a desire to improve systems and keep the team informed of issues. The successful candidate needs to be professional, polite, attentive to details and understands the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Oversees the Division's Container room, ensures proper receipt and distribution of laboratory specimens to correct sections
  • Oversees and coordinates laboratory pre-testing procedures
  • Coordinates daily work assignments with peers to ensure all Section daily tasks are completed
  • Prepares and ships orders from submitting facilities for supplies needed for specimen collection
  • Operates routine equipment used for media preparation and maintains organization
  • Operate an autoclave for waste sterilization
  • Performs preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment
  • Prepare reagents and assist with sample preparation per Standard Operating Procedures
  • Completes documentation and recording of testing data
  • Develops and recommends policies and procedures pertinent to the Branch and Division.
  • Keeps work area clean and free of debris
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Ability and desire to learn quickly
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures
  • Understanding of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe and other similar products
  • Computer literacy
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work with others
  • Adhere to confidentiality requirements (HIPAA)
  • Self-starter with initiative to problem solve

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Three years of laboratory experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Additional education in laboratory science, medical laboratory science, biology, chemistry, microbiology, zoology, or a related field will substitute for the required experience on a year for year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE

Work is performed in a laboratory setting. May be exposed to stressful situations and potential hazards related to laboratory conditions and supplies which may require the following of safety precautions.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
