The Engineering and DevOps Manager, Families, will lead an Engineering team for Common Sense Media and oversee the development, back-end systems, and infrastructure of all client-facing digital products for our Families division, which provides parenting advice along with media ratings and reviews (of movies, TV shows, books, apps, games, and more) to help parents and caregivers make informed decisions about their kids' consumption of digital content. Operating as full-stack engineer, this role will also lead a team dedicated to the architecting, developing, and maintaining of client-facing digital products. The primary focus will be on translating organizational and customer requirements into seamless, engaging interactive applications.
This role will collaborate very closely with the Head of Product, as well as the Product, QA, and Design teams, to realize and successfully deliver ambitious product visions and road maps.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a keen interest in exploring emerging digital technologies, while remaining up to date with best practices in coding and development. Moreover, they will be enthusiastic about motivating and guiding a team of engineers. This is a hands-on Engineering Manager role that requires ongoing code development alongside management of the Engineering team.

REPORTS TO: Chief Product & Technology Officer
SALARY: $160,000-$200,000
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Alignment: Develop and oversee technology road map for the Families division that is aligned with overall organizational objectives.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with Engineering lead for Education and Privacy to align and streamline technology road maps, and align them with the overall technology strategy.
Product Road Map Consultation: Be a thought partner to the Head of Product to help develop and deliver product road maps.
DevOps Leadership: Oversee back-end and infrastructure design and architecture, and extend robust operating support to the Families, Education, and Privacy divisions.
Team Leadership: Lead the formulation and management of Engineering team goals, ensuring alignment with product road map and technology strategy.
Mentorship: Provide mentorship and advice to engineers within the team and across engineering teams, and foster the professional development of team members by providing regular feedback, setting achievable goals, and creating opportunities for skill enhancement.
Culture Building: Cultivate a culture of continual learning and improvement within the team, encouraging the exploration of new technologies and contemporary development methodologies.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
At least 5 years of experience as a Senior Engineer mentoring engineers and leading complex solution design.
Experience in app development using Flutter and QA processes.
Experience working in a LAMP stack with PHP skills.
Strong grasp of DevOps: workflow automation, including GitHub Actions and Cloudflare.
Demonstrated proficiency writing standards-compliant HTML5 and CSS3.
Understanding of current best practices in front-end and mobile development, including responsive design, touch interfaces, performance optimization, and progressive enhancement.
Up-to-date knowledge of contemporary engineering and development practices.
HIGHLY PREFERRED:
Extensive experience with Drupal (Version 10 ) and its universe of contributed modules.
Experience with Lando and Dockerized containers.
Proficiency with JavaScript in a cross-browser, cross-device environment (both jQuery and vanilla JS).
Fluent in Agile development and use of Jira.
