POSITION : Engine Operator I / II

SALARY : ENOP I : $20.00 $22.56 ENOP II : $20.99-$24.34

REPORTS TO : Engine Operator Senior

LOCATION : Mount Tolman Fire Center, Nespelem / Keller / Inchelium Districts

Basic Functions :

ENOP I : This is an entry level position (Wildland Fire Engine Crewmember) in Fire Management. This is the entry level in this series classification - individuals at this level desiring promotion to the next higher level (Engine Operator II) will have to apply a compete for positions when they are advertised.

ENOP II : This is a Journeyman level position (Wildland Fire Engine Crewmember) in Fire Management. This is the second level in this series classification - individuals at this level desiring promotion to the next higher level (Engine Operator III) will have to apply and compete for positions when they are advertised.

This position is the equivalent of the advanced firefighter / squad boss (FFT 1). This position may be required to supervise 5-7 firefighters, or act as the Engine Crew Leader if one is not present.

BOTH : Employees at this level serve as members of a (2-4) two to four-person engine crew. This position is expected to have advanced firefighting skills and knowledge of basic fire behavior.

The work involves activities related to Wildland fire suppression / management / control as a firefighter on an engine, helitack module, or hand crew.

Other related duties might involve fire prevention, patrol, fuels management projects and repair of firefighting tools, equipment and facilities.

Employees will also work as part of the Prescribed Burn Crew and will be required to assist other Fire Management staff with various work projects such as cutting and piling vegetation, operating ATVs, grass seeding, fencing and mowing.

The nature of work is characterized by the varied nature of assignments.

Qualifications

Education and Training :

Engine Operator I :

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must possess current fire training certificates for the following courses : ICS-100, IS-700, S-130, S-190, L-180, and Standards for Survival / LCES.
  • Must be Red Card qualified as a FFT2

Engine Operator II :

  • All of ENOP I Qualifications in addition to :
  • Must possess current fire training certificates for the following courses : S-131, ICS-200, S-211, S-212
  • Must have a minimum of 2 seasons in fire suppression and fire management (each season includes the summer months June, July, August and September)
  • Must be Red Card qualified as a FFT1
  • Must be Red Card qualified as a ICT5

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Requires knowledge of standard fire program requirements, suppression tactics, methods and procedures and skill in the use of wildland firefighting hand tools, pumps, and hoses, and chainsaw sufficient to perform routinely assigned fire suppression and prescribed assignments and to maintain firefighting tools and equipment.
  • Requires basic knowledge of fire behavior, hazards, and accepted fire safety practices and procedures to prevent injury and loss of life.
  • Requires the ability to perform duties under stressful and adverse operation conditions such as long work hours, heavy workloads, emergency situations, adverse working and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to operate four-wheel drive pickup trucks and fire engines
  • Requires some knowledge of agency and interagency qualifications, position task book requirements and certification standards, and prescribed assignments to maintain firefighting tools and equipment.
  • Requires basic knowledge of life apparatus operation and pumping mechanisms to ensure equipment is operated in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Requires ability to operate four-wheel drive pickup trucks and fire engines.
  • Requires knowledge of fire terminology sufficient to communicate with other crewmembers.
  • Requires knowledge of reporting requirements and procedures.
  • Required to be available to work as needed beyond a 40-hour work week including weekend, holidays and extended hours on weekdays.
  • Required to be able to perform moderate to heavy physical tasks in the outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Must pass the arduous firefighter medical examination needed to take the Arduous pack test, within 60 days of hire.
  • Must take a Pack Test, and pass with an Arduous rating, within 60 days of hire.
