Columbus Consolidated Government is Hiring a Heavy Equipment Supervisor - G125 - Street Maintenance Division Near Columbus, GA

This position is responsible for supervising the work of employees and inmates of the Streets Maintenance Division.

  • Supervises and trains employees and inmate crews.
  • Assists the Heavy Equipment Manager with delegating and assigning work.
  • Ensures that citizen requests are handled in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that equipment is in working order.
  • Ensures that proper grades, compaction rates, and other technical specifications are met on job sites.
  • Completes work request forms.
  • Assists other divisions and departments as needed.
  • Completes employee performance appraisals.
  • Enters daily work into log books.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies
  • Makes recommendations for the purchase of replacement equipment.
  • Directs the operations of construction and repair sites; directs maintenance of dirt roads and shoulders.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of management and supervisory skills.
  • Knowledge of the operation of heavy equipment
  • Knowledge of engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques used in Public Services, utilities, construction, and maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of mathematics.
  • Skill in the maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Skill in reading blueprints or other design drawings.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions, to be able to answer questions, resolve problems, and basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with one to three years’ experience. Possession of a valid commercial driver's license (CDL). This position is required to supervise state inmate labor. Employee must pass the Department of Corrections three-day certification within the time frame required by this department which is normally six months but may be altered.

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.

  • Balancing – maintain equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching.
  • Climbing – ascending, descending ladders, stairs, ramps, requires body agility.
  • Crouching – bending body forward by bending leg, spine.
  • Feeling – perceiving attributes of objects by touch with skin, fingertips.
  • Grasping – applying pressure to object with fingers, palm.
  • Handling – picking, holding, or working with whole hand.
  • Hearing 1 – perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, receive information.
  • Hearing 2 – receive detailed information, make discrimination in sound.
  • Kneeling – bending legs at knee to come to rest at knees.
  • Lifting – raising objects from lower to higher position, moving objects side to side, using upper extremities, back.
  • Manual Dexterity – picking, pinching, typing, working with fingers rather than hand.
  • Mental Acuity – ability to make rational decisions through sound logic, deductive reasoning.
  • Pulling - use upper extremities to exert force, haul or tug.
  • Pushing – use upper extremities to press against objects with force, or thrust forward, downward, outward.
  • Reaching – extending hands or arms in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.
  • Speaking – expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
  • Standing – for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping – bending body downward, forward at waist, with full motion of lower extremities and back.

The work is typically performed in an office, library, computer room, or outdoors where the employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
