Columbia Energy is Hiring a Safety Specialist Near Richland, WA

Company Summary:

Columbia Energy & Environmental Services, Inc. (Columbia Energy) has been in business for over 30 years. We began as an engineering firm in support of nuclear cleanup operations for the U.S. Department of Energy at Hanford in Richland, Washington. We have progressively grown from our origins into a full-service engineering and fabrication company providing cost-effective solutions in the nuclear, defense, energy, and hazardous waste industries.

We are an established small business headquartered in Richland, Washington. We offer full-service engineering, design, fabrication, instrumentation and controls, electrical, database and software engineering, technology development, and geophysics/subsurface imaging. We also have facilities in Tucson, Arizona and Aiken, South Carolina. We are presently licensed to provide engineering within the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and South Carolina.

We are currently hiring for one full time permanent Safety Specialist to join our growing team! We offer competitive wages, great benefits and a positive work environment.

Job Summary:

The Safety Specialist coordinates and supports safety programs, policies, and procedures that meet OSHA and other applicable company and shop safety requirements. This position assists in evaluating company procedures, facilities, and equipment by conducting inspections to identify unsafe conditions and to supports implementing safeguards and solutions.

Being a Safety Specialist means ensuring team members and the organization complies with all current safety regulations and that all employees are aware of safety requirements and are prepared to follow safety procedures. This role will also collect data and reports on all safety and accident events.

Essential Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Coordinate safety compliance programs.
  • Conduct safety inspections to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and prevailing professional standards and practices.
  • Supports and coordinates implementation of safety policies and programs.
  • Provide safety training to personnel including managers and supervisors.
  • Assist in analyzing and investigating safety incidents to ensure that action is taken to correct deficiencies or violations of established standards.
  • Investigate employee complaints and suggestions regarding hazardous conditions.
  • Evaluate new and existing jobs, processes, or products to determine the existence and severity of hazards and recommend controls.
  • Maintain safety records.
  • Attend AGC monthly safety meetings.
  • Assists with Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) training.
  • Provide technical guidance on safety issues.
  • Assist in performing equipment inspections.
  • Coordinate Safety Data Sheet (SDS) logs.
  • Support tracking and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in construction, manufacturing, fabrication or applicable industry with safety-related responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal safety and health regulations.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft suite, especially word and excel.
  • This employment opportunity involves government contracts. Per those contract requirements applicant must provide proof of US citizenship.
  • Must possess a current CPR/First Aid card or be able to pass CPR/First Aid Training.
  • Must pass an employment record, criminal background check, and a drug screen (drug and alcohol-free workplace).

Other Qualifications:

  • A Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Certification is not required but is considered a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Employee will be required to adhere to large amounts of standing, walking, bending, squatting, and lifting.
  • Will talk and hear to communicate. Will use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, pull: objects, materials, controls and tools repetitively. May be required to lift, carry and move up to 50lbs.
  • Will work at heights, climb ladders and stairways, work off of platforms and man lifts, and may occasionally work out on an open structure using the appropriate fall protection requirements.
  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves and leather work boots.
  • Will be required to work in hot/cold/damp environments.

Working Conditions while Performing Essential Functions:

This position is performed in a shop setting. The atmosphere is fast paced and deadline oriented with focus on safety and quality.
