Colorado State University is Hiring a Training specialist Near Hilo, HI

The Botanical Monitoring Specialist position is located at Pohakuloa Training Area, (PTA), Hawaii. This position coordinates and implements natural resources actions to manage botanical resources at PTA, including 19 plant species listed as threatened or endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act.

PTA is a ,-acre Army training facility located on Hawaii Island at 2,- feet elevation in the saddle region between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes.

Position is contingent upon funding for continued CSU support for natural resource management on PTA.

The Botanical Monitoring Specialist assists with developing and implementing plans and protocols for monitoring and managing botanical resources on PTA with an emphasis on rare plants and associated threat management.

The Specialist assists with developing project goals and objectives and assists with developing priorities and work schedules to ensure performance goals are met across the Botanical Program.

The Specialist manages botanical program data using GIS and other data management and statistical software to manage, summarize and analyze data.

The specialist assists with interpretation of data analyses for report writing. The Specialist will perform field tasks up to 50% of the time.

Work location is dependent on the needs of the partner / project / role. In some instances, positions may require staff to be fully in-person.

In other instances, hybrid or remote arrangements may be possible. This position will require the incumbent to be fully in-person. Required Job Qualifications

  • BS / BA in botany, biology, environmental science, natural resource management, or related plant science.
  • Three years experience with rare plant / vegetation monitoring, including developing and implementing protocols for monitoring plant populations.
  • Experience with rare plant management, including in project planning, design, and implementation.
  • Demonstrated experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) including data entry and management, analysis, map creation.
  • Proficient with data management and basic statistical analysis using computer programs.
  • High proficiency in scientific / technical writing.
  • Must have a valid drivers license or the ability to obtain a drivers license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in botany, biology, environmental science, natural resource management, or related field.
  • Two years of experience in program / project management.
  • Experience supervising / leading teams.
  • Experience working with threatened and endangered plants, in Hawaii.
  • Experience with climate change and adaptation for rare plants and vegetation communities.
  • Experience with statistical analyses, data modelling, and proficiency in R.
  • Experience with Global Positioning System (GPS) and field navigation.
  • Ability to conduct strenuous field work on extremely rugged terrain.
  • Experience with chemical and mechanical control techniques for invasive plant species.
  • Experience participating in public education or outreach events.
  • Experience working on a military installation or previous military.

  • Assists with plan and protocol development for all aspects of the Botanical Program.
  • Assists with allocating resources and staff time and prioritizing tasks to achieve performance goals and objectives.
  • Contributes to quarterly, annual, and biennial reports and technical documents.
  • Contributes professional opinion and judgement to interpret data analysis and scientific findings.
  • Assists with State and Federal permits.

  • Trains field staff on monitoring techniques to ensure consistent and accurate data collection.
  • Develops plant identification training for staff across all programs.
  • Ensures data are properly transferred from collection devices to electronic storage.
  • Performs field work 2 days per week.

Percentage Of Time 50 Job Duty Category Research, analysis and reporting Duty / Responsibility

  • Assists with developing research and sampling designs and associated protocols and SOPs.
  • Administers botanical data management systems including (geo) databases, spreadsheets, and other electronic and physical files.
  • Performs QC procedures on collected data.
  • Produces data summary reports and analyses.
  • Develops and maintains information files for selected plant species including regulatory documents, scientific literature, and other pertinent documents.
  • Reviews and provides professional critiques for the Army, as required, of regulatory and other technical documents.

Percentage Of Time 25 Job Duty Category Supervision Duty / Responsibility

  • Directly supervises 4-6 field biologists and technicians.
  • Provides performance planning, regular feedback, and annual evaluations.
  • Ensures all staff receive training and professional development.
  • Oversees task performance to ensure quarterly and annual goals for the Program and for the employee are accomplished.
  • Participates with position searches as needed.
