Outdoor Program Coordinator
ABOUT THIS POSITION
Summary:
The Coordinator of the Outdoor Program is the administrator principally responsible for the overall management of the Colorado Mesa University Outdoor Program. The Coordinator provides leadership for the Colorado Mesa University Outdoor Program and services through policy development, personnel management, fiscal direction, and long-range planning. The Coordinator of the Outdoor Program reports to the Director of Student Life and collaborates with the Program Director of the Outdoor Recreation Industry Studies Degree.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  • Create short- and long-term goals for the Colorado Mesa University Outdoor Program congruent with the organization’s mission, vision, and values. Lead the OP to meet those goals. Including goals assisting our students (particularly first generation and inner city students) in expanding their experiences and appreciating various aspects of the outdoors in Western Colorado.
  • Provides leadership in the development of curricular and extra-curricular outdoor programs for students through experiential learning opportunities, in areas of environment and recreation programs. 
  • Develops and produces on-going special opportunities and training to enhance the development of leadership skills and awareness among students.
  • Responsible for the oversight of the rental program including inventory tracking, purchasing, rental software management, and advertising with the goal of generating year to year financial growth.
  • Recruit, interview, train, supervise, and evaluate OP professionals and student staff. Develop and execute a staffing plan. Oversee student scheduling.
  • Enforce, update, and edit program policies and procedures.
  • Propose updates/revisions to standard operating procedures based on industry best practices with input, consultation, and recommendation from the Outdoor Recreation Industry Studies program.
  • Schedule and facilitate regular staff meetings to address progress on core goals.
  • Coordinates services offered by the Outdoor Program, including, but not limited to:
    • Afternoon outings and day programs
    • Weekend and Semester Break (fall and spring) Outdoor Adventures
    • Weekly Kayak Pool Sessions
    • Yearly certification programs (WFR, CPR, etc.)
    • Special events and campus outreach activities
      • Assist with recruiting and retaining students as per the main goals of the university and Student Services
      • Have a presence at recruiting/retention events (Mesa Experiences, New Mav Days, Homecoming, Parents’ Weekend, Student Services initiatives, etc.)
      • Assist in raising the University’s profile by being a good partner and pillar in the community and/or region and state at conferences
      • Collaborating with partners in the region to host students events, i.e. local snowmobiling association “Snowskippers” or the Grand Mesa Nordic Council.
  • Oversee the assistant coordinator in the execution of programming including (but not limited to)
    • Trip Operations: Travel Authorization forms, rosters, liability waivers, permitting.
    • Trip Logistics: Expenses and budgeting, gear/equipment, vehicle reservation, food packing, behavior expectatins of both staff and students
    • Program Assessment: Trip reporting, enrollment tracking, instructor professional development
    • Emergency Response: Supports the Outdoor Program Emergency Response System by serving as office responder for several trips each semester.
  • Responsible for both departmental and participant risk management:
    • Ensure Outdoor Program trips operate in compliance with public land regulations and environmental ethics.
    • Ensuring student employees and particpants adhere to safety guidelines and follow appropriate emergency/accident procedures for all injuries and incidents
    • Acquire permits and maintain land use documentation as appropriate.
  • Responsible for the Outdoor Program budget, including budget management and cash handling.
  • Oversees OP staff in marketing the Outdoor Program including promotion of events, activities, and services offered. Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the OP’s website and social media 
  • Hold regular office hours Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., also performing work outside of these hours, as necessary, to support the program. Hours may be adjusted with approval of the Director of Student Life.
  • Additional Essential Duties of the Outdoor Program Leadership Team- The following additional responsibilities are essential to the Outdoor Program. Through collaborative teamwork or as supplemental skill sets to each other, they are required to be fulfilled by either the Coordinator or Assistant Coordinator, or both. Duties listed below are subject to change based on the needs of the campus and the skill set of the other professional staff member.
    • Oversee the Kayak Roll sessions at the CMU rec center pool.
    • Seek out new outdoor activities and experiences in coordination with community and regional groups to expose CMU students to a wide range of outdoor activities including but not limited to: water sports, hiking, cycling, motorized sports, sports shooting, archery, etc. 
Minimum Qualifications Required:
•Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited institution. 
•Professional experience of 3 years in outdoor programming including staff management, and budgetary management
•Wilderness First Responder certification (or willingness to get it.)
•Outdoor Adventure Skills: Skill and teaching/trip leading experience in backpacking and in at least five of the following areas is required: Whitewater Kayaking, Whitewater Rafting, Rock Climbing, Caving, Canyoneering, Backcountry Skiing, Avalanche Rescue, Swift Water Rescue, International Travel in Developing Countries, Mountaineering or Sea Kayaking. Knowledge of use and maintenance of various types of outdoor equipment is required. 
•Language and Interpersonal Skills: Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively, both orally and writing, to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to demonstrate rapport and care for students. Demonstrated experience and understanding of great customer service and evidence of having built collaborative partnerships. Ability to work with diverse groups of people. 
•Mathematical Skills: Experience with budget and financial management. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, and percentage. 
•Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions in verbal, mathematical or program form and deal with sever abstract and concrete variables.
•Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to climb mountains, endure extreme temperatures for long periods of time, carry heavy packs, and spend extended time in the outdoors. The employee should be in top physical shape to perform the duties of this job. 
•The duties of this position are performed in a office environment, multiple outdoor environments, classroom and foreign countries. Working nights and weekends is required.
Preferred Skills/Certifications/Trainings: 
•Master’s degree in Outdoor Rec, Education, or another related field
•Leave No Trace Master Educator
•NOLS or related Outdoor Program Risk Management certificate
•American Canoe Association or Rescue 3 swiftwater rescue instructor or provider
•PCIA or AMGA single pitch instructor or provider
•AIARE or AAI Avalanche Level 1 and 2 certified
•AORE and or AEE Member
•Broad experience in integrating issues relating to student development in a college/university setting.
