Job Summary

As a leader of the accounting team, the Controller is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating all accounting operational functions, which includes supervising various accounting duties and providing financial related reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the board, and senior management. The Controller is responsible for assisting in various projects, internal and external audits, regulatory reporting, preparation of annual financial statements, as well as management reports.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Planning, directing, and coordinating all accounting operational functions
  • Managing the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of consolidated business results
  • Coordinating and preparing internal and external financial statements
  • Managing bond accounting and investment settlement functions, ensuring records are accurate and properly accounted for on a monthly basis
  • Coordinating activities of external auditors
  • Reviewing general ledger reports and ensuring balances, postings, and variances are reasonable and addressing discrepancies with accounting and appropriate bank departments
  • Providing support and problem-solving assistance to all branch and divisions as needed
  • Monitoring accounts payable for accuracy and timely payment
  • Preparing leadership and board reports monthly in a timely manner
  • Performing reviews of all general ledger reconciliations and investigates and clears items according to policy
  • Assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement, and implementing new processes
  • Evaluating accounting and internal control systems
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting database, as needed
  • Preparing regulatory reports for the bank, holding company, and related entities accurately and timely
  • Ensuring all applicable state and federal tax returns are prepared and filed timely with appropriate agencies
  • Protects assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls
  • Assists with budgets by establishing schedules; collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data; recommending plans
  • Achieves budget objectives by scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, anticipating future legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, filing financial reports, and advising management on needed actions
  • Leads and manages financial staff including recruiting, training, coaching, and evaluating performance 
  • Protects operations by keeping financial information and plans confidential
  • Ensures BSA compliance by reading and being familiar with the BSA/AML program/policy; following all BSA/AML/OFAC policies and procedures; and completing all BSA/AML/OFAC related online courses
  • All other tasks, responsibilities, or duties, as directed by management

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, Master’s degree and CPA license preferred
  • Minimum 5-10 years’ experience in accounting/finance 
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in banking preferred 
  • Experience in working with multiple legal entities under different legal umbrellas preferred
  • Experience with financial reporting requirements
  • Knowledge of all aspects of GAAP
  • Excellent computer skills
