MECHANIC I, II, OR III - BISBEE/ WHETSTONE
CLASSIFIED: Position is subject to the provisions of the Merit System Rules pursuant to Arizona Law 
OPENS: Thursday, February 2, 2024

ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $18.00 - $21.00 per hour dependent upon qualifications, plus a comprehensive benefits package to include membership in the Arizona State Retirement System.

All positions require a post-offer, pre-employment background screening.
Mechanic I 
Under direct supervision, performs work of average difficultyin repairing, maintaining and rebuilding automotiveand heavy equipment; performs related work as assigned.
Mechanic II
Under direct supervision, performs skilled work of routine difficultyin repairing, maintaining and rebuilding automotive and heavy equipmentperforms related work as assigned.
Mechanic III
Under general supervision, performs skilled work of moderate difficultyin repairing, maintaining and rebuilding automotive and heavy equipment; performs related work as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class.
 Mechanic I 
Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains a wide variety of vehicles and heavy equipment in the field or in the shop; performs various preventative maintenance functions; orders parts and supplies required for assigned tasks; maintains an orderly work area.
Mechanic II
Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains a wide variety of light fleet and heavy fleet vehicles and/or heavy equipment in the field or in the shop; performs diagnosis, various preventative maintenance and repair functions; orders parts and supplies required for assigned tasks; maintains an orderly work area.
Mechanic III
Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains a wide variety of light fleet and heavy fleet vehicles and/or heavy equipment in the field or in the shop; performs diagnosis, various preventative maintenance and repair functions; orders parts and supplies required for assigned tasks; maintains an orderly work area.
 Mechanic I 
High School diploma or equivalent; one (1) year of recent work experience in the maintenance and repair of passenger cars, vans, commercial vehicles (up to 1-ton capacity) and heavy equipment; must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License and the ability to be covered by county insurance. Successful completion of mandatory pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing are required.
An equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved may be considered.
Mechanic II
High School diploma or equivalent; three (3) years of recent work experience in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of passenger cars, vans, or commercial vehicles and/or heavy equipment; must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license and the ability to be covered by county insurance. Successful completion of mandatory pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing are required.
An equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved may be considered.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSPreference may be given to applicants who have a valid Class ‘A’ Arizona Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), valid U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Medical Examiners Certificate, or ASE Technician Certifications.
Mechanic IIIHigh School diploma or equivalent; five (5) years of recent work experience in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of passenger cars, vans, or commercial vehicles and/or heavy equipment; must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license and the ability to be covered by county insurance. Successful completion of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing.
An equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved may be considered.

  • using and caring for various tools and equipment. 
Ability to:
  • prepare records and reports;
  • lift a minimum of 60 pounds;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public;
  • follow written and verbal instruction;
  • read, write and speak English;
  • communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Mechanic II

Mechanic III

Mechanic I, II and III
WORK ENVIRONMENTWork is primarily performed under limited supervision. Incumbent generally performs work in an indoor (open bay) setting with work in a variety of climatic conditions to include extreme heat and cold, along with rain and snow. Work may result in exposure to mechanical and chemical hazards.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Essential functions of this position require: manual dexterity, large motor skills, ability to communicate, lifting, kneeling, squatting, climbing, crawling, stooping, turning/twisting, balancing, reaching and handling with varying frequencies.
Heavy work: Occasional lifting and carrying objects up to 75 pounds, frequent lifting and carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds; and/or continuous lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling 10-20 pounds.
Mental Application: Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability and creative problem-solving skills are important
