Cobb County Government is Hiring a Crew Leader - Trails and Greenspace Near Marietta, GA

The purpose of this classification is to drive or operate heavy trucks, tractors, and other medium-sized equipment where driving and maneuvering the vehicle constitutes the majority of the work required to complete tasks for various maintenance, upkeep, and/or construction projects; equipment in this classification does not involve the operation of additional mechanisms other than those that are moderately simple and routine.The incumbent in this position will design, construct and maintain the county’s trail network. Operates bobcat, backhoe-mounted loader, and loaders of similar size to load and/or move gravel, dirt, sand, and other materials for smaller projects and amounts; utilizes bobcat to clear land or debris. Operates backhoe to perform basic digging, trenching, and clearing of land or materials for maintenance and upkeep of landscape; controls placement of equipment and determines optimum approach to each digging scenario in order to minimize destruction of property and avoid electric, water, sewer, and other public utility lines.Leads and coordinates daily work activities of assigned crew: confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; organizes tasks in order to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with co-workers, assists with complex situations, and provides technical expertise; assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment; and provides input on disciplinary action and employee performance evaluations.
Leads and performs tasks involving a variety of landscaping duties: mows grass; plants flowers and shrubs; weed eats around signs and fence lines; edges curb lines; clears leaves, tree limbs and other debris from park areas; spreads and hauls ground cover, dirt, or mulch; applies herbicides and pesticides; prunes trees and shrubs; weeds flower beds; aerates and spreads grass seed; services irrigation systems; grooms ball fields; and removes snow and ice, etc.
Leads and performs tasks involving maintenance and construction for various parks and facilities: resurfaces and renovates playgrounds, fields and courts; paints buildings, equipment, and parking lots; repairs and assembles fences and playground equipment; builds sets and staging, shelves and other items; and performs light plumbing, electrical, masonry and carpentry repairs, etc.
Performs general custodial duties at various parks and facilities: cleans parks, ball fields, restrooms, kitchens, locker rooms, meeting rooms, and other areas; vacuums carpets; hoses decks; scrubs and waxes floors; dusts; washes windows; empties trash; and sets ups and tears down staging, chairs, tables, bleachers, etc. for meetings, classes, tournaments, and events.
Maintains inventory of equipment, parts and supplies: gathers supplies and equipment to complete work assignments; transports supplies to and from work site; initiates orders for materials and equipment needed; and maintains related documentation.
Operates or uses a County vehicle, and various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments such as lawn mower, weed eater, blowers, tillers, bobcat, tractor, dump truck, wheel barrel, sledge hammer, chain saws, chippers, back hoes, and other power or motorized equipment.
Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shop and work areas: monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; and reports faulty equipment.
Coordinates daily work activities; organizes and prioritized projects/tasks; make work assignments and evaluates work; monitors status of work; troubleshoots problem situations; and performs the duties of supervisor in absence of same; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; gathers equipment, tools, parts and supplies needed to conduct work activities; ensures availability of materials to conduct work activities and initiates requests for new or replacement materials as required.
Prepares or completes various forms reports, correspondence, checklists, work orders, notices, vehicle/equipment maintenance records or other documents, and reviews completes, processes, forwards, or retains as appropriate; communicates with supervisor other departments, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information or resolve problems.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
 
High School Diploma or GED required supplemented by vocational or technical training in landscaping, parks maintenance or related field; supplemented by two years of experience as in parks maintenance, landscaping or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Preferred qualifications
One year of trail maintenance, design, or construction experience.Commercial Driver's license permit with the ability to obtain Class A Commercial Driver's license within six months of hire, including appropriate endorsements.

Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, heights, confined spaces, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, water hazards, or rude/irate customers.
