Coastal Villages Region Fund is Hiring an Oiler Near Seattle, WA

Description

Coastal Alaska Premier Seafoods, a subsidiary of Coastal Villages Region Fund, is currently seeking applications for an Oiler to work aboard the F/T Northern Hawk. The Oiler is an entry level position. The primary job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, assisting the Engineering Department in the safe and efficient maintenance and operation of all ship’s engineering systems. Provides the teamwork and assistance necessary for all operational needs. 

Specific Duties include:

Assisting the Engineering Department in the operating, maintaining and repairing of all vessel engineering systems and processes:

  • Diesel propulsion and electric generating systems. 
  • Deck hydraulic and pneumatic systems. 
  • Fuel and lubrication systems.
  • Refrigeration plant.
  • Sewage treatment. 
  • Water making/desalinization system. 
  • Vacuum sanitation system. 
  • Heating and ventilation systems.
  • Operation of incinerator and garbage compactor.
  • Capable of assisting in monitoring and preventative maintenance programs on all main systems engineering systems.
  • Capable of assisting in maintaining ship fuel and discharge logs.
  • Capable of assisting in maintaining spare parts inventory. 
  • A member of the emergency teams and take all the training required and provided by the company.
  • Attends and participates in all company sponsored training programs as well as outside training in management or engineering related courses as directed. 
  • Strictly uphold all company policies and support company philosophy.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position reports directly to the Chief Engineer

Status: Non-Exempt- Annual Contract; 401k and Health Benefits upon eligibility

  • Coastal Villages Region Fund has a zero tolerance Drug and Alcohol Policy.
  • Selected applicants will be required to successfully pass a post-offer background, drug test and reference check. Applicants must be willing and able to be away from home for extended periods of time, and must be willing to live and work in a cramped environment, and work as a team member at all times. In addition, good communication skills, self motivation, and a positive attitude are important to ensure a high quality product and the safety of all crew members.
  • This is a safety sensitive position, and impairment by any amount of drugs or alcohol may result in undue harm to self or others. 

Work Environment:

  • 12 hours or more per day for the duration of the trip, including loading and unloading.
  • Ability to work at sea for extended periods of time.
  • Perform tie-up, shipyard, and in-port work for required maintenance as directed by CAPS management on a 12-hour per day schedule.
  • Normally in a rotation of approximately 182 days per year, or more as needed.

Requirements

  • Must be capable of assisting with the operation and troubleshooting of marine systems as indicated above and know the limitation of own capabilities. 
  • Must know systems and components involved in logging procedures and present these as requested by the Chief Engineer.
  • Must be capable of assisting with oil spill response and recovery per regulations.
  • Must be capable of assisting with proper handling and disposal or hazardous materials.
  • Must possess excellent teamwork and assistant abilities. 
  • Ability to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Competent participant in vessel’s abandon ship, firefighting and man overboard drills.
  • Ability to interface in a cooperative and businesslike manner with company vendor representatives, shipyard representatives and outside contractors. 
  • Must be punctual, organized, and able to work under stressful conditions.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to pass pre-employment and unannounced random drug tests.
  • Must be capable of boarding and exiting a vessel without physical assistance by climbing up and down a gangplank or using a Jacob’s ladder.
  • Must climb or descend one or more sets of steep stairs, or vertical ladders inside and outside the vessel in all weather conditions as extreme as 30 degrees below zero.
  • Must be able to work in confined workspaces.

Basic Mental Functions:

  • Applicants must be able to perform intermediate math; add, subtract, multiply, divide, handle fractions and decimals; all on numbers between 1-100. Applicant must also be able to understand, read, speak and write in English.
  • Applicant must possess the ability to apply these basic functions to American currency, weight, distance and volumes.
  • Applicant needs the ability to perform these basic functions in stressful, noisy environments and in the adverse weather conditions as mentioned above.

Upon receiving a conditional offer, selected applicants may be required to have physical examinations. The results of those tests may require a licensed healthcare provider and selected applicant to determine whether reasonable accommodations can be structured to allow for safe performance of the job described above while in a remote and hazardous location.
