Description

Job Purpose 

Laboratory Trainer/GC Chemist is responsible for training the all new laboratory employees on laboratory testing, Company quality standards, and laboratory safety. The Laboratory Train/GC Chemist is also responsible for training existing employees on any new lab testing as needed.Laboratory Trainer/GC Chemist is also responsible for analyzing samples using GC methodologies and reviews data for client release as well as performs routine maintenance and quality checks on all GC instruments.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Development of technical and hands on training program for laboratory personnel. Training topics may include methods, techniques, laboratory equipment, practices for materials handling and waste and required documentation.
  • Performs basic laboratory skills training for scientific staff, manages the training process and training documentation.
  • Administers the new hire as well as on-going training program to ensure analysts/scientists remain current and qualified to run methods by review of method documentation, demonstrating methods, running side by side, and observing personnel qualifying. The Laboratory Trainer/GC Chemist will collaborate with department management to identify personnel to be qualified on a given method.
  • Observes method execution to determine technique related problems. Laboratory Trainer /GC Chemist will then train personnel on resolution or changes required.
  • Participates in review of SOPs for consistency with laboratory practices.
  • Ensures technical training plans for each job title are complete and current. Ensures compliant documentation of all training activities according to department requirements.
  • Develops material for training programs, reviews, evaluates and modifies existing and proposed programs; recommends and executes appropriate changes.
  • Delivers topic specific training as required.
  • Sample preparation, analysis, and data review of all GC, GC/MS, and HPLC instruments.
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting of all GC equipment.
  • Calibrating equipment to ensure that analysis is accurate according to Quality Management systems.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and approve results of Quality Control samples.
  • Ensures all GC Quality Control records are up to date.
  • On call as needed for processing and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read and comprehend all analysis as well as safety standards in English, including ASTM, UOP, IP and other well-defined analytical standards and procedures used in the laboratory.
  • Exercise procedural, safety and quality requirements specified in Laboratory Manual & Safety Manual and company policies.
  • All other duties assigned by management.

Other Duties 

  • Management reserves the right to change job duties with or without notice.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or a related science preferred, or equivalent work experience; coupled with a minimum of (2) years of direct transferable experience working with GC’s.
  • Knowledgeable in ASTM, IP, and UOP standards relating to GC, GC/MS, and HPLC.
  • Must be able to work with all chemical, petrochemical and petroleum products.
  • Must be able to work in stressful and demanding environment.
  • Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) experience preferred.
  • Have a great work history with a track record of being responsible individual.
  • Proficient in the use of laboratory equipment.

Travel 

  • 10% of Travel or as needed.

Working conditions 

  • This position is performed in a Laboratory environment.

  • Required to walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms; and to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or twist body to fit and/or reach.
  • The employee’s lifting requirement and/or move items up to 50 pounds.
  • Be able to work in the presence of odors typical of petroleum or petrochemicals without allergic reactions or nausea, when such odors are within OSHA-designated permissible exposure limits (PELs).
  • May be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
