Job Summary: Location: Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital Address: 933 E Pierce St, Council Bluffs, IA Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 6:30am - 3:00pm Provide basic patient care under direction of nursing staff. Responsibilities: Essential Functions Promotes positive relations when interacting with patients, visitors, families, physicians, customers and co-workers. Greet, smiles and makes eye contact. Introduces self by name. Volunteers to help co-workers and other employees. Addresses patients and others by surname. Responds quickly to patients and/or other peoples' needs. Knows and demonstrates 6 step customer complaint management process. Confirms with nursing staff that patient is prepared for surgery and properly identified using 2 patient identifiers. Nursing unit will be informed of all patients leaving the unit. Transports patients to and from Surgery area. Follows procedure established for transporting patients. Safely positions patient in OR holding area. Must stay with unattended pediatric patient or with those patients that cannot be safely left alone. Pediatric patients, confused and disoriented patients must be attended by surgical aide. Assist with post surgery patient transport. Ensure patient safety during transport. Used appropriate lifting and transfer techniques when moving or transferring patients. May assist staff with additional patient placement as needed. Prepares surgery carts as needed for the day. Washes transportation carts daily. Keeps carts prepared to use with sheets, bath blankets and pillow in place. Early A.M. cleaning of operation room. The operating rooms are to be prepared for the day by wiping all surface areas with alcohol including the lights. Cleanliness of Surgical Dept. must be maintained. Assists in cleaning operating rooms between cases. Operating rooms are to be disinfected with cleaning solutions. Preparation of rooms between cases. Rooms must be readied with clean liners, clean linen on surgery table, and clean suction bottles and tubing. Cleans OR equipment with designated solution per policy. Any variance with equipment, i.e., wires, etc. are to be reported for necessary repairs. Assists in the proper disposal of trash and soiled laundry. Bagged trash from operating room areas are placed in designated containers for pick up according to hospital policy. Scans all trash and linen in metal detector. Keeps all solution containers maintained for adequate supply. Maintain solution containers to include checking expiration date. Assists in stocking center corridor supply carts. Center corridor carts are to be stocked daily from supplies in OR storeroom. Obtains and delivers specified items to laboratory. Uses 2 patient identifiers when obtaining blood. Responds to needs of the operating room in a timely manner. All surgical aides are required to wear pagers and must respond when called. They must utilize the communication board when leaving the department. Orders kitchen supplies and makes coffee for doctor's lounge. Doctor's and employee's lounges must be stocked with necessary supplies. Coffee is made daily in doctor's lounge. Cleans floors of inner corridor, outer corridor, and ancillary rooms daily. Maintain cleanliness of all floors. Cleans all windows in the department with window cleaner at least once per week. Cleans all sinks daily. Sinks are to be kept clean. All windows should be kept clean and lint and dust free. Washes tops of warming cabinets and sterilizers in inner corridor with designated solution. Maintain cleanliness of Surgical Dept. Refills all paper towel dispensers. Vacuums vents and washes the walls in the Surgical Dept. on a monthly basis. Cleanliness of Surgical Dept. must be maintained. Clean lounges/rest rooms daily. Maintains and dispose of trash/linen if needed throughout the day. Completes as assigned in a timely manner. Completes as assigned in a timely manner. Must have a basic knowledge of aseptic technique. Aseptic technique is important for the operating room and must be maintained according to hospital policy. Schedule: Monday - Friday 6:30am - 3:00pm Job Description: Job Requirements Education High school diploma, General Educational Development (GED) or equivalent required. Experience No experience necessary. License/Certifications Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months of hire. Skills/Knowledge/Abilities Working with patients, housekeeping practices, manual dexterity, lifting and physical work. Work in a team environment, work with others, listen and take directions.
