Job Summary

A radiology supervisor oversees the daily operations of the radiology department within a medical facility, ensuring efficient workflow and adherence to protocols and safety standards. Their responsibilities typically include managing staff schedules, training and supervising radiology technicians, ensuring equipment maintenance and quality control, overseeing patient care and safety during imaging procedures, and liaising with other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care. Additionally, they may be involved in budgeting, purchasing supplies, and implementing new technologies or procedures to improve department efficiency and patient care. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff in the department.
  • Oversees the daily workflow of the departments.
  • Provide constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees per company policy.
  • Provide leadership and direction to clinical staff to ensure smooth and efficient operations across all clinical departments.
  • Develop and implement quality assurance programs to monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care delivery.
  • Support the professional development of clinical staff through training, mentorship, and performance feedback.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Managing and supervising radiology technicians and other support staff. This involves assigning duties, scheduling shifts, and providing training and guidance to ensure quality patient care. 
  • Ensuring that all radiology procedures adhere to quality and safety standards set by regulatory bodies such as the American College of Radiology (ACR) or the Joint Commission. This involves implementing and monitoring quality control measures, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with protocols.
  • Ensuring that patients receive high-quality care during radiology procedures. This includes addressing patient concerns, ensuring their comfort and safety during procedures, and coordinating with other healthcare professionals as needed.
  • Overseeing the maintenance and repair of radiology equipment to ensure it is functioning properly and meets regulatory requirements. This may involve coordinating with vendors for servicing and upgrades.
  • Optimizing workflow within the radiology department to ensure efficient and timely delivery of services. This may involve developing and implementing procedures to streamline processes, minimize wait times, and maximize productivity.
  • Managing the budget for the radiology department, including monitoring expenses, identifying cost-saving opportunities, and ensuring that resources are allocated effectively to meet departmental needs.
  • Maintaining accurate records of patient procedures, equipment maintenance, and other relevant information. This may involve using electronic health records (EHR) systems or other software for documentation purposes.
  • Staying up-to-date with advances in radiology technology, procedures, and regulations through continuing education and professional development activities. This may involve attending conferences, workshops, or pursuing additional certifications.
  • Collaborating with other departments within the healthcare facility to coordinate patient care, share resources, and address any issues that may arise.
  • Providing leadership to the radiology team and fostering a positive work environment. Effective communication skills are essential for interacting with staff, patients, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in radiologic technology or a related field is usually the minimum requirement Certification as a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) or eligibility to obtain certification.
  • Radiology supervisors usually need to be licensed or certified in radiologic technology by the appropriate state licensing board.
  • Certification from a recognized organization such as the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) may be required or preferred by some employers. ARRT offers certifications in various specialties within radiologic technology.
  • Experience in a supervisory or leadership role is highly desirable.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to effectively manage staff, coordinate workflows, and interact with other healthcare professionals.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to address complex operational challenges and implement effective solutions.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
