Job Title: Bus Driver (Shelby County)

Department: Transportation

Reports to: Driver Manager

FSLA Status: Non-Exempt/Hourly

Safety Sensitive: Yes

Summary

The Bus Driver provides passengers with safe and efficient operational service. Under close supervision, operates commercial public transit buses in the ClasTran service area (Jefferson/Shelby County). Work is monitored and reviewed through observation and through passenger response. Positions in this job classification are considered safety sensitive and are subject to drug testing, including random drug screens, in accordance with Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Drug and Alcohol regulations.

Must be willing and able to commute to 50 Springdale Rd, Birmingham, AL 35217.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Performs a complete pre-trip/post-trip inspection of bus

2. Performs safety checks of equipment

3. Refers to and implements route maps, time schedules, and instructions for pull-outs, demand-response service, scheduled breaks, and pull-ins

4. Provides schedule, route, and fare information to passengers seeking assistance

5. Maintains and operates mobile data terminal (MDT) to communicate with dispatchers, complete pre-trip/post-trip inspections, perform all stops in the correct order, receive turn-by-turn navigation, and accurately collect and report fares

6. Operates wheelchair lift and assists handicapped in boarding, riding, and alighting in a safe manner

7. Secures all mobility devices according to Federal ADA regulations and ClasTran policies and procedures

8. Reports hazardous or dangerous conditions along bus route and at passenger loading zones, including such hazards as unusual traffic, road conditions, obstructions, construction, and potential criminal activity

9. Writes reports and completes forms, including, but not limited to accident, incident, motor coach discrepancy reports, run sheets, passenger counts, and receipts

10. Adheres to safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to promote a safe work environment and ensure the well-being of ClasTran customers, employees, and business partners

11. May be required to mentor new bus drivers about bus routes and operating procedures

12. Provides assistance in controlling accident or incident scenes

13. Provides vacation and temporary relief, as required

14. Complies with all Federal ADA regulations

15. Must attend mandatory employee meetings; including safety, training, retraining, etc., as required

16. Inspects bus for lost articles

17. Removes trash, left items, prepares bus for pull-out, and maintains a clean bus while operating in service

18. Contacts Dispatcher with all concerns

19. Maintains regular and predictable attendance

20. Completes assigned tasks in a safe manner and in a constant state of alertness

21. Must read chemical labels and follow safe handling procedures

22. Must understand and follow all safety rules

23. Must be able to work in a cooperative and professional manner with co-workers and supervisors

24. Performs other related duties similar in nature and level as assigned

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, and individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 1. Must pass pre-employment physical, including DOT medical card and DOT Drug Screen

2. No more than one (1) moving violations within the last 12 months and no convictions of driving under the influence of any prohibited substance

3. No convictions of driving while suspended or revoked

4. Must have good attendance and work performance record as verified by reference check prior to offer of employment

5. Must be able to work varying shifts

Education/Experience

High school diploma or equivalent

Previous experience as a bus driver a plus

Knowledge & Abilities

1. Ability to read and interpret a map and follow directions

2. Must be at least 21 years of age and have at least six-months of full-time customer service experience

3. Knowledge of state and local traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in the operation of public vehicles; vehicle safety rules and regulations

4. Knowledge of basic money and time concepts; includes the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals and the ability to read and use military time

5. Ability to read, write, and speak basic English

6. Ability to operate ClasTran vehicles and equipment safely and efficiently

7. Ability to communicate courteously and effectively

8. Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective security operations for the protection of people, data, property, etc.

9. Ability to react quickly and effectively to sights, sounds, and situations that may occur while operating a motor vehicle; good motor skills, eyesight, and hand-eye coordination

10. Ability to foresee situations and incidents that may occur and make quick, effective decisions in accordance with Federal regulations and ClasTran policies and procedures by applying common sense and good judgement

11. Ability to work in seasonal weather conditions (hot and cold temperatures, wind, rain, snow, etc.)

12. Ability to sit and use arms, hands, legs, and feet for long periods of time; push, pull, assist, and secure wheelchair passengers and other passengers requesting assistance; lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
