As a part-time summer lifeguard/water safety instructor, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of children and other visitors at our swimming pools during the summer season. This is a part-time position suitable for individuals seeking employment through our summer hours.

Essential Job Functions
Responsible for the safety of swimmers and enforcement of established standards of conduct at City operated swimming pools. Enforce safety and discipline in order to prevent accidents; caution swimmers in unauthorized swimming areas, rescue swimmers in danger of drowning, administer first aid, including CPR, as necessary. Collect fees and accurately prepare a daily cash summary of funds collected. Inspect swim facilities for cleanliness, clean, and refill pools as needed. Perform light custodial duties such as cleaning toilets, urinals, sinks, mirrors, mopping floors, and emptying trash receptacles. Water Safety Instructors will also be responsible for the instruction of swimming techniques. Previous water safety instruction experience is preferred for Water Safety Instructors. This is not intended to be an all-inclusive listing of essential job functions; the performance of other essential functions may be required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to control swimmers, enforce safety and take disciplinary action for swimming infractions. Ability to work in hot, humid weather and perform all requirements of the position without serious physical impairment.
Minimum Education & Experience
Possession of a valid Lifeguard Training Certificate from the American Red Cross. American Red Cross certification in Water Safety Instruction is also required for Water Safety Instructors. An equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be directly related to the foregoing specific requirement may be substituted.
Special Requirements
Must be able to pass a swimming test consisting of: 500 yard continuous freestyle swim in less than 10 minutes; 50 yard sidestroke supporting a 10 lb. diving brick in less than one minute, 10 seconds; two minutes treading water supporting a 10 lb. diving brick. All applicants must come prepared to swim for their interview and must bring in all current American Red Cross certification cards. Absence of non-prescribed controlled substances in the applicant’s system as verified by a laboratory approved by the City of Winter Haven. WSI applicants must be currently certified in Standard First Aid and CPR. MUST BE ABLE TO WORK A FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE INCLUDING EVENINGS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS.
