Utility Worker I
Summary: Under direct supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties in the construction, installation, maintenance, renewal and repair of City water, wastewater, and gas structures and systems

Essential Job Functions: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with
Disabilities Act, may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position- specific tasks.

  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled, manual duties in the maintenance, repair and construction of City properties, including water, wastewater and gas structures and systems while assigned to one or more divisions.
  • Assists in the cleaning, maintenance and repair of water, wastewater and gas systems.

Assists in the maintenance and minor repair of sanitary lift stations and water pump stations. * Assists in the removal, replacement and repair of old pipe and the laying of new pipelines, mains, services, meters, valves and hydrants.

  • Digs and fills trenches manually or using light equipment. Learns to operate medium vehicles and equipment under supervision.
  • Transports structures and equipment within the water, wastewater and gas systems as assigned.
  • Responds to emergency and off hour situations as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Must live within 15 minutes of reporting location.
  • Basic computer operation and related software programs.
  • Conducts basic research, completes documentation, and maintains required paperwork.
  • Handles utility billing service orders to include water/gas turn on/shut off orders, leak detection, and repair of broken parts.
  • Delivers professional and courteous customer service when responding to customer service requests, questions and complaints.
  • Travel will be necessary at times to conduct the required duties of these job

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of basic construction, maintenance and repair procedures, practices and methods used within water, wastewater and gas systems.
  • Knowledge of local topography and geography.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices including OSHA shoring specifications and sloping regulations.
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations relating to City utilities.
  • Skill in performing basic duties in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of City utility systems.
  • Skill in operating light equipment, vehicles, and specialized tools used in the water, wastewater and gas utilities.
  • Skill in understanding and following oral and written directions.
  • Skill in determining appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.

Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses:

  • High School diploma or equivalent GED certificate.
  • One (1) year work experience in the general construction or maintenance field.
  • A Valid State of Arizona Driver’s License.
  • Obtainment of ADEQ Grade I Water Treatment and Distribution and Grade I Wastewater

Collection and Treatment certificates. You must obtain one grade within 18 months. * Obtainment of the following trainings within 18 months of hire: of Low-High Density Poly Fusion

Additional Certifications will need to be received within 18 months.
Gas Pipe Certification, Operator Qualification in Pipeline Safety, Natural Gas Leak SurveyTraining, S.C.B.A. Training Confined Spaces, Trench Safety Training, Competent Person Certification and Training, Forklift Operator, and become a Certified Flagger
