City of Victoria, TX is Hiring an EMT Trainee Near Victoria, TX

JOB SUMMARY

The EMT Trainee will participate in on-the-job training to learn department procedures and techniques required to perform the duties of an emergency medical technician and obtain certifications for a career in firefighting and emergency medical technician.
EMT Trainee will attend the TCFP Firefighter Certification Course provided by the Victoria Fire Department. Preference will be given to Fire Certified candidates.
Candidates are required to provide TDSHSEMT Certification by the proposed start date to meet the minimum qualifications of the job.
After successful completion of requirements/promotion to Firefighter/EMT:
Schedule – Shift hours are 48 on/96 off
Salary – $50,412/yr
In order to complete the EMT Trainee online application, please attach EMT Certificate of Completion OR TDSHS EMT Certification (Additional documents can be submitted by clicking "Add Supplemental Attachment" when uploading certificates to the application). Selected applicants will be invited to participate in the testing which will be held on Friday April 26, 2024. Applicants who pass the written test will be invited to participate in the Physical Ability Test. Applicants who pass the Physical Ability Test will be invited to a panel interview. A video of the Physical Ability Test is available online here. All requirements must be met and verifiable by the certifying agency by the closing date of this posting – 04/07/2024.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Learn to understand and follow departmental policies, rules, and instructions in firefighting and emergency medical care delivery.
  • Read, understand, and retain the information in technical materials, rules, regulations, and procedures related to firefighting.
  • Learn to read and interpret geographical information systems and street maps and navigate streets.
  • Learn to operate all firefighting equipment, both manually operated and motorized.
  • Learn to analyze emergencies and quickly determine practical courses of action.
  • Learn to identify various hazardous materials. Learn and follow all applicable safety procedures.
  • Retain the presence of mind in emergencies.
  • Operate and maintain voice radio equipment.
  • Work in adverse physical locations and conditions.
  • Communicate concisely and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include performing firefighting and emergency medical care activities in an emergency
  • Able to function and exercise judgment in stabilizing the victim when out of contact with the physician. Formal protocols (standing orders) may be established by medical command and must be followed by the EMT in these situations.
  • Maintain proper records of EMS activities.
  • Perform additional primary duties and essential functions that may be identified by the Fire Chief or designee.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

The employee must frequently lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift up to 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, co-peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places; occasionally exposed to wet and humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration. Possibility of severe injury or loss of life while fighting fires or providing medical services. The noise level is usually moderate

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • Ability to learn and understand the rules and regulations of the fire department.
  • Ability to learn modern firefighting, fire prevention, and prehospital medical care practices.
  • Display proper judgment in making work decisions.
  • Ability to meet minimum health and physical fitness standards.
  • Demonstrate mechanical aptitude as required in the operation of firefighting equipment.
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification:
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Twenty-four hours of college preferred.
  • Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) EMT-Basic certification required.
  • Texas Commission Fire Protection Basic Structural Fire Protection Certification within an established timeline to be determined by the department.
  • A valid Texas Class B driver's license is required within one (1) year of employment. Driving record that meets City guidelines.
  • Must complete the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) within a timeline established by the department.
  • Employees may be required to obtain other specialized training to meet the fire department's needs.

Must possess a valid State driver’s license.
