Are you ready to kickstart your career in the field of your choice? The City of Thousand Oaks is currently accepting applications to fill part-time internships in the Public Works Department. Under supervision, the Public Works Intern will perform a variety of duties in support of staff in the Public Works Department. Join us and gain valuable hands-on experience while shaping your future!

Positions will be filled based on the candidate's qualifications, interests, and operational needs. The City will review applications at monthly intervals. After review of applications, potential candidates may be invited to complete a recorded interview. Those candidates selected for further consideration will be invited to an in-person or online live interview.

We currently have openings in one or more of the following Divisions:

Municipal Service Center (MSC):

Administration
Landscape Division
Streets Division
Fleet Division
Water Division
Wastewater Division

Hill Canyon Treatment Plant (HCTP):

Environmental Compliance
Wastewater Treatment Operations
Wastewater Maintenance (Mechanical/Electrical/Instrumentation)
Wastewater Laboratory

Primary Responsibilities:

Responsibilities vary based on positions.
At MSC responsibilities may include providing administrative support; working in the field providing operational support for landscape maintenance, street maintenance, fleet mechanical maintenance, water distribution system maintenance, or wastewater collections system maintenance.
At HCTP responsibilities may include providing administrative or field support to environmental compliance activities including water, wastewater, and stormwater system sampling and programmatic support; working in a laboratory environment; working in the field in a wastewater treatment plant providing support to plant operations, mechanical, electrical or instrumentation maintenance.

The ideal candidate should possess:

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
A team player approach; be a self-starter and take initiative on assignments and tasks.
Strong work ethic; be dependable, flexible, and willing to take on varying assignments and tasks.
Basic knowledge of safe work practices around traffic, construction sites, and in industrial settings.
Ability to learn quickly.
Basic skills and knowledge applicable to the related positions of interest (see example job specifications).
A valid class C California driver’s license is required.
Ability to perform manual labor, lift, and push, tools, equipment, and supplies, climb ladders, and utilizing power tools may be necessary for conducting fieldwork.
