CITY OF THORNTON is Hiring an Assistant Youth Program Director - Adventure Club, Teen Escape, Volunteer Corps, Southern Stars Near Carpenter, CO

May - August

Under general supervision, assists the Youth Program Director with various licensed and non-licensed youth programs.
Licensed Summer CampSupervise school-age youth in our state-licensed, 9-week, summer camp. Help plan and lead games, sports, arts and crafts, and go on field trips. Staffing is comprised of Director, Assistant Directors, and Youth Program Leaders. Program hours are Monday-Friday, 6:30 AM - 6:00 PM at the Carpenter Recreation Center. Shifts vary within program hours, 25-37 hours/week.Portable PlaygroundPortable Playground travels to different locations throughout the City. We offer this FREE program at 10 Apartment Complexes or Mobile Home Communities for nine weeks of the summer. Staff will set up tents, tables, chairs, and activities for the children in our community to play and have fun in a supervised environment. Staffing is comprised of three staff members (Director, Assistant Director, and Leader). Shift is Monday-Friday 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM.Southern StarsSupervise youth in a health and nutrition rotation (gym games and activities) in the morning. Help plan and lead drop-in sports, games, and outdoor activities in the afternoon. Staffing is comprised of Assistant Director and Youth Program Leaders. Shift is Monday-Thursday, 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM at North Star Elementary School.Youth and Teen Volunteer CorpThe Youth and Teen Volunteer Corps transports and supervises youth ages 11-17 to varied locations throughout the metro area. We try to engage in 10 different projects each week for 9 weeks of summer. We have spent time in our parks helping with weed mitigation or setting up fencing for fireworks, food banks, The ARC, our Active Adult Center helping with Bingo, and International Hearing Dog to help with yard work. Staffing is comprised of three staff members (1 Director and 2 Assistant Directors). Shift is typically Monday-Friday 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM.

Assists with planning and implementation of program curriculum.
 
Assists with supervision of participants.
 
Assists with providing age-appropriate activities.
 
Enforces safety standards and regulations throughout the program to ensure compliance with local, state and federal laws.
 
Ensures all possible safety measures are observed.
 
Communicates and enforces facility and program policies and procedures.
 
Responds to emergency situations as required and maintains accurate accident and incident reports.
 
Provides excellent customer service, including interacting with parents to answer questions and resolve problems.
 
Complies with City and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures.
 
Reports parental issues and concerns to supervisor.
 
Leads and trains Youth Program Leaders.
 
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience:
High school diploma or GED. Must be at least 18 years of age. One year of experience working with children/teens in a supervisory role. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Requires Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
 
Valid Colorado driver's license with a safe driving record.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and the department.
Knowledge of basic child care principles.
Skill in performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Standard Precautions activities.
Skill in the safe and healthy operations of a structured program.
Skill in maintaining a variety of records.
Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
Ability to effectively lead and coordinate children's activities.
Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.
Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
Ability to listen well and communicate effectively with children ages 5-15 and with parents.
Ability to promote and provide a quality program.
Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.
Ability to react quickly and accurately to changing elements.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and make repetitive motions. This job requires medium work: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee must demonstrate the ability to remain calm during routine and stressful conditions. The employee is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles. The employee may be subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including being in extreme heat. The noise level in the environment is usually moderate to high.
