POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Preferred Qualifications:
Two years of fire fighting experience as a volunteer or one-
year experience in a full-time department.

Minimum Qualifications:
Must be 18 years of age or older;
High school diploma or equivalent;
Possession of a California Class C Driver’s License;
Ability to successfully complete a background investigation.

Licenses/Certifications:
Possession of or the ability to successfully complete the
following training programs to be provided by the city:
Current CPR/First Aid card;
S-130 (Firefighter Training);
S-190 (Introduction to Wildland Fire Service);
ICS 100 & ICS 200;
Hazmat FRA;
NIMS 700;
Pack Test

This position is subject to the City of Susanville Residency Policy,

Term of employment is typically 6 to 9 months depending on the
intensity of fire season and scheduling.

Fire Department will help individuals gain
experience in emergency services fields; and will
promote a sense of accomplishment, achievement,
and pride in the work they do. Seasonal
Firefighters will learn new skills, be a part of a
team, give back to the community, and make a real
difference.

about the position:

The Seasonal Firefighter is a temporary employee of the Susanville Fire
Department. This position, under the supervision of the Fire Captain,
provides fuel reduction of properties in the city, assists with fire
department projects and programs, operates equipment, assists with
local and state wildland fire suppression, supports weed abatement
program and does related work as required.

About the Department:

The Fire Department consists of sworn personnel consisting of a Public
Safety Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, three Fire Captains, three Firefighter-
Engineers, and one Administrative Assistant.

The Susanville Fire Department has several dedicated volunteers and an
Explorer Scouts Program. The Susanville Fire Department has automatic
and mutual aid agreements in place with local, state and federal
agencies. The department encourages career development through
ongoing education and training programs.

Seasonal Firefighter Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Utilizes tools and equipment to remove vegetation and other
materials from properties that have been scheduled for abatement;
Assists with programs and projects that fall under the responsibility
of the fire department;
Cleans, maintains, and repairs tools and equipment;
Responds to fire, rescue, medical, and other emergency incidents;
Lays supply and suppression hose lines and operates nozzle to direct
stream of water on fire;
Raises, lowers, and climbs ladders;
Performs overhaul and salvage operations;
Operates radio, telephone, and computer equipment;
Cleans station quarters, equipment, and maintains a clean and
orderly condition in and about the fire house;
Studies fire department rules and regulations, public education and
prevention practices, and firefighting techniques;
Participates in fire drills and training exercises;
May be required to respond to emergency calls during non-duty
hours;
Performs other related duties similar to the above in scope and
function as required.
