GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for the ensuring coordination, testing and planning of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), direct the lead and copper inventory project and make compliance determinations in accordance with policy and guidelines, and the inspection, maintenance, testing and repair of commercial, industrial, and residential water meters.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs a variety of skilled duties in support of the Automated Meter Repair (AMI) team including: reading, building, programming, installing, activating, inspecting, diagnosing, replacing, and routing AMI meters.
  • Coordinates the installation of water meters with developers and contractors for new development; utilizes portable GPS devices and other programs used to coordinate meter service locations.
  • Installs, activates, programs, reads, inspects, diagnoses, routes, and replaces automated meters; programs and assigns water meters and transmitting devices to customer properties electronically.
  • Utilizes AMI software to perform operational duties such as generating log summaries and submitting information to the billing system; generates water usage and validation reports.
  • Monitor and manage AMI system alerts, analyze alerts and create reports, and take action when required.
  • Uses diagnostics tools to perform trouble shooting duties on all automated meters and determine cause of malfunctions.
  • Completes a variety of tasks involving water meters; Installs, repairs and inspects water meters,electronic communication register (ECR) meters, meter pits and meter reading equipment, valves, pressure regulators and flow testing meters; and trains other staff members in all aspects of the job.
  • Performs skilled tasks related to water meter operations and maintenance; programs the multiple transceiver unit to the ECR; inspects and tests dual check valves; maintains large meter lids; makes cut-off keys and valves; installs pressure reducing valves; installs back-flow preventers; replaces curb stops; trims weeds and shrubbery around meter boxes.
  • Promote regulatory consistency, as well as facilitating the acquisition of lead and copper data and act as a liaison with the regulated community and citizens.
  • Compile all lead and copper inventory results and make compliance determinations in accordance with policy and guidance.
  • Responsible for ensuring service orders are closed timely and properly.
  • Required to work “On-Call” hours in rotation as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE of, SKILLS AND ABILITIES to:

  • Knowledge of City Streets.
  • Knowledge of wireless mesh networks (WMN).
  • Knowledge of the operations and maintenance of automated metering systems, repair and installation methods, material and equipment.
  • Perform semi-skilled general maintenance and construction tasks; perform heavy physical labor.
  • Skill in customer service and communicating with customers.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to read maps to find service addresses.
  • Ability to read meters manually within assigned routes.
  • Ability to work well within a team environment and independently.
  • Ability to work alternative schedules or shifts as requested by supervisor to cover after hour services
  • Familiarity with fiber networks.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Associates in Engineering, Technology or related degree
  • 2 Years’ Experience in Utilities
  • Demonstrated supervisory or management experience; Experience implementing organizational change and process improvements.
  • Must be computer literate – This position will be heavily computer based (Including but not limited to Microsoft Office Proficiency, AMI software, and all GSuite Programs.)
  • Must possess a valid MS driver’s license and acceptable MVR.

Preferred QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three (3) years of prior relevant experience in in Advanced Metering Infrastructure Systems (AMI) in a water and/or electric utility, or related field.
  • Knowledge of the EPA requirements on Lead and Copper inventory

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Environment: Work is primarily performed outside in and around heavy traffic in sometimes adverse weather conditions. Work exposes the employee to hazards associated with traffic, chemicals, fumes, bees, dust, vibrations from machinery or blasting, and loud noise levels. Protective equipment is required such as gloves, orange vests protective eyewear, work shoes or boots and coveralls. The employee must occasionally travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation, and verbally communicate to exchange information.

Physical: Work requires the physical ability to perform heavy and sustained lifting and carrying of equipment, materials, and supplies; physical exertion requiring crawling, pushing and pulling; and standing or sitting for extended periods of time. Work also involves walking on uneven terrain; squatting, bending and stooping; and climbing on and off of machinery and lifting of objects weighing up to 75 lbs.
