CITY OF STARKVILLE is Hiring a GIS/Civil Engineer Intern Near Starkville, MS

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

GIS/Civil Engineer Intern, performs a range of professional engineering work in gathering and compiling data and checking designs; prepares plans, details, estimates, reports and specifications for a wide variety of civil engineering projects; and does related work as required. Work also includes collecting, producing, and maintaining geographic information system (GIS) data in coordination with associated software systems to support the missions of assigned department and/or subject area(s).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs data conversion and processing as needed to support GIS and related functions.
  • Ensures that data complies with the needs of the assigned subject area(s) and ensures adherence to data standards as directed by the GIS Manager.
  • Performs data entry within GIS and related software/database systems.
  • Performs fieldwork related to collection, verification, and ground truthing of GIS data.
  • Coordinates with internal project teams and external resources such as vendors as required by projects.
  • Learn to inspect construction as needed to resolve problems and assess any additional expenditures needed for completion or correction of projects.
  • Assist in implementing and interpreting Utilities’ design and construction design manuals, ordinances, procedures and special studies, all revisions and requests for new material approvals.
  • Assist in program planning, development, implementation and evaluation in area of study.
  • Learn to conduct research studies and/or surveys specific to municipal government programs and services.
  • Learn to review and monitor construction of City Capital Improvement Projects, including water mains, buildings, traffic control, landscape and sanitary sewers.
  • Assist in preparing engineering plans, specifications, drawing, reports and recommendations.
  • Learn a variety of methods of provide leadership, direction and supervision to paraprofessional or technical staff members.
  • Assist in troubleshooting water and sewer related issues, resolving and communication with the customer.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of computers and applicable software.
  • Knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of records management policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Possess and apply strategic thinking skills, including having the ability to clearly define objectives, generate an action plan, define necessary resources, effectively anticipate change, brainstorm, troubleshoot and generate solutions.
  • Possess and apply exceptional communication skills, including active listening skills, conflict resolution, seeking clarification as needed, building relationships and where possible creating “win-win” outcomes using positive reinforcement and diplomacy.
  • Capable of being coached, open to feedback, and engaged in continuous improvement as it relates to knowledge, skills and abilities associated with this position and as an employee of the department.
  • Ability to operate computer and applicable software, printer, scanner, paging system, city vehicle, multi-line phone system, calculator, and standard office equipment while performing essential functions
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work.Ability to work on multiple tasks at one time.
  • Prioritize and schedule workload, to ensure completion when faced with deadlines or emergencies.
  • Keep accurate records; prepare documents and spreadsheets using Word and Excel.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Coursework in Construction Management or Civil Engineering pursuing a BS Junior or senior status. GPA of 2.75 or higher.
  • Minimum of eighteen (18) months of relevant experience operating all department equipment utilized for maintenance, repair or site related construction.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • All applicants must be available starting the Summer Semester 2021.
  • Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver’s License and acceptable MVR.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

All types of weather and temperature conditions. Work and/or walk for long periods of time on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain. Work is performed in an office environment and in close proximity to other workers. Requires working varying hours, weekends, and holidays. Work environment is informal, team-oriented, having both routine and variable tasks with variable pace and pressure. Work is performed in/ outdoors.

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to operate assigned equipment. FREQUENT bending, stooping, squatting, and climbing; standing, sitting, reaching at and above shoulder height, kneeling, balancing above ground, pushing and pulling, crawling, twisting at waist, upward and downward flexion of neck, side-to-side turning of neck; lifting of objects weighing up to 75 lbs.
