City of St. Petersburg is Hiring a Communications Technician I Near Saint Petersburg, FL

This is highly skilled technical work in the installation, maintenance, repair and ongoing support of electronic communications and computer-controlled programming particularly two-way radios. Work involves the technical operation, programming, installation, support and maintenance of communication equipment, primarily in vehicles, including mobile radio receivers and transmitters, base stations, antenna equipment and video recorders; ensuring compliance with established Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules and regulations; and providing lead guidance, training and technical assistance to other employees. Work includes planning, installs and repairs, automotive technical electronic and signal devices, such as but not limited to; telematics, lights, fuel readers, and other add-on or additional components using a variety of electronic and electrical test equipment, including digital volt meters, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, computers and related software, and modulation and frequency monitors; assisting in the evaluation of existing and proposed electronic communication methods; assisting with the development of equipment specifications; and assisting with the purchase of supplies, materials and equipment, including providing recommendations. An employee in this position is expected to be able to perform any and all work tasks and comply with any work schedules, attendance, or duty requirements which may be established by City or department rules, or applicable union contracts. Work is reviewed while in progress through conferences and upon completion.

Salary: $22.90 - $32.18 Hourly

To Qualify


Minimum Qualifications.
Applicants must:

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency, supplemented with technical courses in advanced electronics, electronic communication and/or equipment installation, maintenance or repair.
  • Possess and continue to maintain a valid Driver License.
  • Possess knowledge and experience with electronics and/or electronic communications, including two-way and 800 mHz trunking radio equipment, preferably at the journeyman level.
  • Be able to install, inspect, test, troubleshoot, repair and maintain electronic communication equipment, primarily in motor vehicles, and have skill in the use and care of all related tools and equipment.
  • Possess knowledge of pertinent FCC rules and regulations.
  • Be able to read and understand related technical manuals, schematics, and sketches.
  • Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, orally in writing.
  • Acknowledge this position is designated as Emergency Critical (EC) and if hired into the position, an applicant must be immediately available to the department before, during, and after a declared emergency and/or disaster.

Desirable Qualifications.Preferred applicants:

  • Possess an Electronic Technician Certificate from a recognized agency (i.e. APCO, NARTE- technical or engineering level, NABER, FCC General Class Radio).
  • Possess considerable knowledge of the principles or electrical and electronics theory.
  • Able and willing to work under stressful conditions and persevere on long projects and complicated problem resolutions.
  • Are able to establish good working relationships with employees, departments and vendors.
