Position Description
Are you looking to secure a fun, rewarding, and exciting job for the summer? The City of Signal Hill is now accepting applications for part-time, seasonal employment for the Summer Recreation (Day Camp) Program.
The ideal candidate is energetic, caring and supportive with enthusiasm and passion for working with youth. Candidates should submit one application and it will be evaluated based on education and experience.
The individual(s) selected for these part-time positions will work an average of 20-30 hours per week and must be available to work a varied schedule Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. between June 1, 2024 to August 25, 2024. Occasional night and weekend hours may be required to support city-wide special events.

Example of Duties
Under the direction of the Recreation Specialist and Recreation Coordinator, supervise, instruct, and plan age-appropriate activities for summer camp.
Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act may include, but are not limited to the following characteristic duties, responsibilities, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics.
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Conduct and supervise recreational activities including excursions, crafts, games, lead camp songs, team, and individual sports.
  • Provide activity instruction and guidance; demonstrate activity; model appropriate behavior.
  • Render aid and assistance to participants, intervene in altercations and arguments, and provide comfort and first aid when needed.
  • Assist in planning and scheduling activities.
  • Maintain participant attendance records.
  • Inspect facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Assist in aquatic activities.
  • Prepare accident/incident reports.
  • Enforce rules and regulations to assure the safety and welfare of participants.
  • Conduct inspections of buildings, vehicles, facilities, and equipment daily to ensure sites are safe and clean; recommend actions to supervisor.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
Perform various related duties as required including general cleaning, preparing snacks and maintain site program supplies.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education, training, and work experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform in the position is qualifying. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess:
EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Some college courses preferably in recreation, child development, education, or related field. Demonstrated responsible experience in recreation or related programming for individuals of all ages and customer service.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Class C California Driver License and CPR/First Aid certification.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Methods and techniques of developing, planning, and organizing group recreational activities.
  • Principles of supervision and training.
  • Budget principles and practices.
  • Safety practices; first aid and CPR procedures.
  • Community and public relations.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing slightly skilled movements, such as pressing, cutting, or mixing.
  • Ability to exert moderate physical effort in sedentary to light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, carrying, pushing and pulling.
  • Ability to maneuver and steer equipment and machinery requiring simple, but continuous adjustments, such as the operation of an automobile.
  • Ability to work weekend and evening hours.
  • Ability to lift, push and pull 15 pounds.
Supervisorial Responsibilities:
  • Ability to counsel and train others; ability to model and explain appropriate behavior.
  • Ability to assign, review, plan, and coordinate the work of other employees.
  • Ability to provide instruction and guidance to staff.
  • Ability to assess the work of employees and write performance appraisals.
Mathematical Ability:
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Ability to calculate decimals, ratios, percentages, and fractions.
Judgment and Situational Reasoning Ability:
  • Ability to use functional reasoning and apply rational judgment in performing diversified work activities.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory and/or judgmental data.
  • Ability to classify, compute and tabulate data and information, following a prescribed plan requiring exercise of some judgment; ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure and sort information; ability to assemble, copy, record and transcribe data and information.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication:
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information, such as regulations, correspondence, and general operating manuals.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with groups of children or adults utilizing a broad base of verbal skills.
  • Ability to advise and interpret to others how to apply policies, procedures and services based on community recreational needs and interests.
  • Ability to persuade, convince and/or train others, including the ability to act in a lead worker capacity.
  • Ability to maintain records, prepare reports and schedules.
Environmental Adaptability:
  • Ability to work under moderately safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors may cause discomfort and where there is a risk of injury, requiring minimal recovery.

Physical Examination:

Oath and Disaster Service Worker:
All City employees are required to sign the Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance for Public Employees upon the beginning of employment. Pursuant to California Government Code Section 3100, all City employees are required to perform assigned emergency service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster and are required to sign a Disaster Service Worker Statement upon hire.
This is a part-time, non-benefited, at-will position, with no property or vested rights, and is not a part of the City of Signal Hill Personnel System Rules and Regulation or the Civil Service Process.
  • Position is not eligible for benefits.
  • Part-time employees receive paid sick leave in accordance with California state law per the "Healthy Workplace/Healthy Family Act of 2014" and SB 616. Paid sick leave accrues at the rate of one (1) hour per every thirty (30) hours worked. Part-time employees accrue forty (40) hours per year of employment; these hours can be carried over to the following year for a maximum total accrual of eighty (80) hours.
  • Enrollment in the Public Agency Retirement Services Alternative Retirement System Plan (PARS).
