DISPATCHER

This employee is responsible for receiving and transmitting messages by radio, telephone, and other electronic methods to the police department and/or other agencies and personnel. In addition, employee is responsible for the maintenance of a variety of records.

The employee is under the immediate supervision of the Deputy Chief of Police or shift supervisor. The employee receives general instructions for the work to be performed, but most aspects of the work are guided by specific operating standards or procedures. There are times when independent judgment is necessary.

This is a full-time position with an hourly rate of $18.20 (there is a .50-night shift differential).

The City currently provides the following for full-time employees:

The employee will operate a variety of equipment including but not limited to a computer, radio and transmission equipment, paging system, copier, fax, printer, alarm system, and multi-phone systems.

Work is typically performed in an office setting with frequent interruptions and with the need to deal with a wide variety of people by telephone, some of whom may be irate or difficult.

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Receives and transmits routine and emergency messages via radio, telephone, and other means for the police department and/or other agencies and personnel.

2. Maintains a log, via CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) of all radio traffic, including but not limited to all traffic stops, arrests, and response times on police calls.

3. Operates NCIC/TIES computer system in order to obtain such information as driver’s license and auto registration information, as well as other information as needed. Also, enters stolen items, as well as stolen vehicles, into NCIC.

4. Provides assistance to persons with complaints or requests for an officer. I.E. Phone calls requesting an officer or police department walk-ins. Dispatches the officer to the scene via radio and maintains a record of the call via CAD.

5. Makes any phone calls as requested by the officer on scene, I.E. Calling for a wrecker, etc.

6. Completes police department and other reports.

1. The rules and regulations of the Federal Communication Commission pertaining and transmitting messages by radio.

2. The operation of radio transmitting and receiving equipment, NCIC computer system, and other equipment generally used in an emergency dispatch operation.

3. Some knowledge of the laws and ordinances of the city and State of Tennessee.

4. Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.

5. Ability to obtain knowledge of required records and reports of a variety of agencies, and to complete and maintain reports.

6. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, including department policies and procedures.

7. React quickly and calmly in emergency situations and follow proper policies and procedures.

8. Obtain working knowledge of the Tennessee “10-codes”.

· Graduation from a standard high school or GED

· Training in the use of computers

· Minimum of 18 years of age

· Pass a background investigation

· Submit fingerprints to the TBI

· Pass a physical and drug screen

· Must be a U.S. Citizen
