City of Shelby is Hiring a Telecommunicator (PT) Near Shelby, NC

Job Description

Performs responsible technical work on an assigned shift dispatching law enforcement, fire, emergency medical service, and non-emergency calls for service, and related work as apparent or assigned. Receives police, 911, fire, and other service requests and calls; transfers calls to appropriate agency; obtains necessary information and dispatches medical, fire, and law enforcement personnel/equipment and/or advises callers of proper contact for assistance or information. Operates radios, telephone, switchboard, alarm systems, recording devices, and computer terminals; enters all calls for service into computer aided dispatch system; provides directions to emergency response personnel using maps, landmarks, signs, geography features, and markers; performs all responsibilities of a certified Division of Criminal Information (DCI) operator; conducts DCI inquiries including criminal histories, warrants, and etc.; enters a variety of information into system; processes routine reports; assists police personnel by providing services and information; performs and updates information for the daily automated welfare check program on the elderly; attempts to locate if contact not made; and performs responsibilities of Police Records Clerk.

Hours: 12 shift hours. Will be required to work outside of normal working hours in emergency situations.

To Compete in the Selection Process: High school diploma/GED supplemented by courses in typing and some experience in general clerical work with some basic computer experience. Must have a general knowledge of the methods of operating the communication system; radio and teletype procedures; geography of the City and location of important buildings; police forms, terminology, and records; and departmental programs, policies, and procedures. Must have the ability to perform a considerable volume of detailed work; maintain files; type accurately and at a reasonable rate of speed; operate general office and data entry equipment; follow written and oral directions; operate a personal computer including some knowledge of applicable software packages; and establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all associates and the general public. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid NC Driver’s License and DCI certification within one year of hire.
