SOCR provides citywide leadership in the areas of civil rights and equal opportunity and works to eliminate discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations. We also provide civil rights trainings and education, propose legislation and policies, oversee the City’s Race and Social Justice Initiative, and support four commissions.
About the Division:
The Race and Social Justice Initiative represents the City of Seattle’s commitment to end institutionalized racism and race-based disparities in City government. In 2023, the City of Seattle passed an ordinance (CB 120525) officially codifying the Race and Social Justice Initiative as law.
This legislation accomplishes that by doing four main things:
Permanently codifies the Race and Social Justice Initiative as law.
About the Leader We Are Seeking:
The RSJI Director will be an effective and courageous champion of racial equity, with a demonstrated history of organizing systems and structures to increase agency for the prevented and persecuted communities in Seattle.Top priorities for this position include:
Leveraging Design Thinking: Organize department-level resources to scale up communities of practice to solve complex issues with comprehensive strategies and plans. Building on the existingcohort model, bring city departments together to think collaboratively about community impact.
Education and Training: Build a training platform that supports the spectrum of employees learning around race and social justice.
Expert Relationship Building and Transformational Change Management:Create a culture of collaboration, mutual respect, and partnership for equity and inclusion work, leveraging visible and transparent leadership with superlative communications and change management that considers all audiences.
Here is more about what you will be doing:
Provide vision and coordination to the Mayor, City Council and City departments on Race and Social Justice. Provide executive coaching and support to department directors and executive leaders. Represent SOCR and RSJI in internal and external forums.
Facilitate racial justice focused processes that promote capacity building and empower disenfranchised communities towards self-determination and impactful solutions. Align institutional objectives and rationale for change with racial justice campaigns occurring within BIPOC communities.
Lead the RSJI Team to develop and implement citywide strategies for the Initiative’s four spheres of influence: Internal City, City-funded, other governments and institutions, and community. This includes training, communication, policies, partnerships, and coordination of interdepartmental efforts in education, equitable development, criminal justice, and other key equity areas.
Develop and manage accountability systems and tools to ensure delivery and implementation of department RSJI workplans.
Develop and implement a plan for citywide deployment of RSJI training curriculum that provides training, certification, quality assurance, and a community of practice.
Navigate and nurture complex agency, community, and political relationships.
Analyze situations with a racial equity lens.
Build strong relationships across a variety of stakeholders, influence others, and manage laterally to outcomes.
Capabilities and Characteristics for Success
Leadership experience in complex, cross-functional organizations.
Public sector experience - either working for, or partnering with, a government agency is preferred.
Lived or work experience with underserved communities and socio-economic diversity.
