City of Seattle is Hiring a Deputy Director - Community Police Commission Near Seattle, WA

The Community Police Commission (CPC) envisions a Seattle where communities and police work together towards shared goals of safety, respect, and accountability. We are committed to amplifying community voices, encouraging dialogue, and building bridges between the Seattle Police Department (SPD) and the diverse communities it serves. As a small yet dynamic team, we champion policing practices rooted in justice and equity.

We are excited to announce an opening for a Deputy Director to join our team and play a crucial role in advancing our mission. In this role, you will collaborate closely with the Executive Director and other key partners to provide strategic leadership and direction to CPC functions. Your responsibilities will include overseeing programmatic, administrative, and budgeting functions, as well as leading a team of professionals.

You will play a pivotal role in providing department-wide leadership, supporting the Commissioners, and advancing the department’s strategic objectives. You will represent the CPC across various platforms, internal and external partners, leadership, and community groups. 

To achieve the department and this role’s objectives, this position will focus on the following priorities:

Strategic Leadership and Program Management:

  • Instrumental in guiding program direction for significant initiatives prioritized by the City, ensuring compliance with the federal consent decrees and legislative mandates.
  • Oversee daily operations and coordinate CPC activities to ensure strategic alignment with broader city initiatives and policing reforms. Manage team workflows to maximize efficiency and impact.
  • Provide strategic leadership, direction, and support across CPC functions, including policy, communications, and community engagement, while collaborating with key partners and city agencies.
  • Representing the CPC on various platforms and collaborating on matters affecting police practices, ensuring effectively communication and support to the CPC’s policies.

Budget Management:

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and key staff to develop and manage the CPC budget, ensuring effective allocation of resources. 
  • Provide input on budgetary decisions, secure funding through the annual budget process, and oversee project budgets.

Team Supervision and Support:

  • Develop comprehensive strategies for staff management that include professional development, performance evaluation, and team building to enhance operational efficiency and job satisfaction.
  • Lead and develop a team of dedicated professionals, ensuring high levels of engagement and performance. Your leadership will be crucial in nurturing the skills and careers of our staff, driving the commission's goals forward through effective team dynamics and staff development.
  • Address personnel issues as they arise and ensure transparent communication both internally and externally.
  • Provide day-to-day support to Commissioners and cultivate strong community and partner relations.

The Deputy Director position requires strong leadership skills, strategic vision, and a commitment to advancing police accountability and community trust in Seattle.

You will be most effective in this job if you have:

  • Progressive experience in program and project management, policy review, personnel management, leadership, budgeting, and operations within government administration, or non-profit sectors.
  • Extensive experience in leadership roles with a significant focus on team management and staff development, ideally within government or community-focused organizations.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, capable of effectively negotiating and resolving conflicts while maintaining strong professional relationships.
  • A track record of actively advancing police accountability or related issues, with legal or legislative training being advantageous.
  • Sharp research and analytical skills, coupled with the ability to navigate complex issues.
  • Proficiency in leading staff within a public setting and a proven ability to connect with community members and organizations.
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and accomplish objectives with minimal direction or oversight.
  • An outstanding ability to collaborate effectively with diverse partners, synthesizing their input into actionable outcomes.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercising discretion, and maintaining composure under pressure, underscored by a history of reliability, diligence, and collaborative engagement. 

In addition to the skills and experience mentioned above, you will need to possess the below required qualifications:

A Master’s degree, Juris Doctor or PhD in a relevant field, along with over 5 years of experience in program management, budgeting, and leadership within government or public settings, or a combination of education, experience and/or training which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.

This full-time, full benefits eligible position is exempt from the Civil Service System and FLSA (not eligible for overtime payment). The full pay range for this position is $119,955.6 - $179,902.08 Annually ($57.45 - $86.16 Hourly). The salary range for this individual role has been identified as $149,918.40 - $175,392.00 annually ($71.80 - $84.00 hourly).

This position offers the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Employees will be expected to work in the office two days a week. Telework option is available 3 days a week under current City of Seattle policy. This position may need to work occasional evenings/weekends. Individual schedules will be based on agreement between the employee and their supervisor. This position involves occasional travel, mostly around the Seattle metro region, some statewide and national travel for conferences, etc.
