Of the nearly 80 cemeteries located in Chatham County, Georgia, the Cemeteries Division maintains five existing cemeteries which are owned and operated by the City of Savannah to include Bonaventure, Colonial Park, Greenwich, Laurel Grove North and Laurel Grove South.

Each cemetery has a unique character and is historically significant to the City of Savannah!

The Cemeteries department is responsible for maintaining the grounds, selling interment rights, providing interment services, maintaining vital record, preserving the historical and cultural significance and coordinating all activities within the cemeteries.

Our team of maintenance workers, senior maintenance workers, crew chiefs, medium equipment operators, conservation technician, coordinators and director collaborate to maintain the beauty of our cemeteries, and ensure machinery runs smoothly while upholding a safe environment where all employees can succeed.

As we continue to grow our small team of 24, the Cemeteries team is seeking a skilled individual ready to keep our beautiful and historical cemeteries and equipment in safe working order.

As a Cemeteries Maintenance Crew Chief, you will participate in facilities and maintenance and repair activities, transportation and disposal operations.

You will also have an opportunity to help maintain our beautiful and historical City cemeteries. In addition to developing your skills, we have fun too!

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversees and performs manual labor, general maintenance, grounds maintenance, landscape maintenance, and custodial duties in cemeteries and cemetery buildings.
  • Assigns, directs, and trains employees, reviews work, and monitors attendance; issues equipment; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress;

inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.

  • Oversees and provides technical guidance of crews in support of maintenance or burial operations; surveys cemetery lots including uncovering buried lot markers, measuring and recording data, probes cemetery lots to locate burial containers, opens and closes graves by machine and by hand, and restores gravesites.
  • Assists cemetery visitors with information and directions; oversees after-hour and weekend cemetery events; responds to service requests.
  • Communicates safety rules and procedures to assigned crew members; monitors work to ensure compliance with applicable regulations;

ensures that crew members are properly outfitted with personal protective equipment.

Performs skilled and lead work on medium and heavy equipment in support of cemetery operations to include, but not limited to, aerial lift truck and chipper, backhoe, dump trucks, crew trucks, and other medium equipment;

performs general maintenance on equipment.

Inspects, operates, and maintains a variety of small engine equipment in support of cemetery maintenance operations; ensures suitable operating condition;

documents and reports any issues.

  • Controls traffic on work sites; sets up traffic control devices; maintains a clean and safe work site.
  • Maintains landscaping, storm drainage, and irrigation systems; treats plants and turf for disease, cultivates and maintains trees and flower beds.
  • Stores, mixes, transports, and applies various pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals.
  • Inspects job sites for compliance with health, safety, and policies; ensures safe, efficient work methods and practices;

completes work orders; recommends alternative solutions.

  • Assists supervisor in training and orientation of less knowledgeable employees by explaining and demonstrating work performed.
  • Assists supervisor in maintaining inventory of supplies, equipment, and chemicals; ensures safety of inventory.
  • Performs stand-by and on-call duties after business hours for emergency response situations.
  • Completes daily reports.
  • Assists in the preparation of facilities for special events.
  • Performs stand-by and on-call duties for after-hour funerals, emergencies, and special events.
  • Serves as a member of the city's Critical Workforce; assists in emergency response during disaster incidents.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED plus two (2) years of landscape, general grounds, or facilities

maintenance grounds plus two (2) years backhoe experience or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Some supervisory experience preferred.

Must possess and maintain a valid commercial Class A or B driver's license with an acceptable driving history.

Georgia State Commercial Pesticide License with Right-of-Way Endorsement required or must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.

Work Location : 330 Bonaventure Rd Work Hours : 7 am to 3 : 30 pm

Additional Requirements

Background investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer / pre-employment medical screen; andverification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.
