City of Santee is Hiring an Engineering Inspector Near Santee, CA

~ Upcoming Scheduled Salary Increase of 4% Effective July 2024 ~
Under general supervision, performs complex technical inspection work of public works, utilities, and private land development projects. This class is distinguished from the lower level class of Field Inspector by the degree of independent judgment, measure of extensive technical knowledge, and field oversight and communication skills required. An incumbent is expected to resolve the more difficult inspection problems and coordinate construction activities as they arise in the field.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. 
  • Perform inspections of technical engineering work involving public works, private land development projects and utility projects;
  • Schedule and coordinate daily inspections for projects;
  • Oversee, supervise, and coordinate inspections with the City's field inspector;
  • Perform construction management tasks related to City Capital Improvement Program projects;
  • Report project status to City engineers and other engineering department staff;
  • Inspect materials and workmanship to ensure compliance with City standards, approved plans and specifications and the City approved materials list;
  • Inspect a variety of public facilities to ensure construction is in compliance with the Standard Specifications of Public Works construction (Greenbook) and other standards and regulations;
  • Assist and monitor contractors in the review and interpretation of plans and specifications for public facility projects;
  • Respond to inquiries from developers, contractors, design professionals and the general public regarding City requirements relative to the construction, alteration and maintenance of public or private facilities;
  • Perform a variety of general recordkeeping, daily reports, and statistical report preparation work;
  • Use computers, computer aided software, and electronic permitting software system to aid in performing the above duties;
  • Review and provide input on the issuance of City permits for work in the right-of-way; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

An example would be:Education:Graduation from high school or equivalent and two (2) years of college-level coursework from a community college in engineering, construction inspection or a related field; ANDExperience: At least three (3) years of recent experience in field inspection or construction management.Public sector experience is desirable.
Supervisory skills are highly desirable.
Qualified Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan Practitioner (QSP) certification is highly desirable.
Experience in the construction and/or inspection of asphalt concrete pavement, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, storm drainage, traffic control, soils testing, and federally funded or federal grants projects is highly desirableNOTE: Qualifying experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

License or Certificate:
Possession of or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver's license at time of appointment. A safe driving record is required and must be maintained during time of employment. Background InvestigationThe applicant selected will be subject to a criminal history investigation through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and a thorough reference check. A waiver for reference and background information must be completed.The applicant selected will be given a conditional offer of employment pending the outcome of a post-offer drug test and physical. City of Santee employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
