City of Santee is Hiring an Emergency Medical Technician, Non-Safety (PART-TIME) Near Santee, CA

The City of Santee is seeking four (4) part-time, non-safety Emergency Medical Technician (no benefits) to respond to medical emergencies and other emergency and non-emergency situations; participate in training, prevention, inspection, education, and related activities to protect lives; perform fire station and equipment maintenance; serve in specialized departmental roles as assigned; provide information and assistance to the public; and perform other related duties as required.

Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
 
  • Safely responding to fire, medical, and other emergency calls with an emergency response team; 
  • Perform emergency medical patient assessment and treatment as indicated and necessary in accordance with San Diego County Emergency Medical Services Treatment Protocol/Policies for EMT level care; 
  • Provide emergency medical care as needed on ALS fire companies and on the ALS ambulance, and assist in the maintenance and replenishment of medical equipment, medication, and supplies; 
  • Maintain records and prepare written reports; 
  • Assist in the maintenance of vehicles, and equipment, fire station, and grounds; 
  • Attend drills, training and conferences; 
  • Obtain the required certifications to drive and operate staff vehicles and ambulances as required; 
  • Learn fire department rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and techniques; and 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

All candidates for this classification must meet the following:
  • 18 years of age at the time of hire
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Possess valid California EMT-B certification with accreditation in San Diego County at the time of hire, which must be maintained for the duration of their assignment
  • Possess a Class C California driver’s license
  • Possess an ambulance driver’s certificate at time of hire
  • AHA, BLS, CPR certification or equivalent
Examination Process: Interested applicants must submit an online application and supplemental questionnaire. This is a continuous recruitment and interviews may be scheduled at any time, so interested candidates are encouraged to apply immediately. Candidates whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the City will be invited to participate in the recruitment process for this position. The recruitment process will consist of the following: First Interviews (Zoom), and Chiefs Interviews (in person).
Physical Demands and Working Conditions Must be able to perform a wide range of physical duties to include: constant upward and downward flexion of neck, side-to-side turning of neck; simple grasping and repetitive use of hands to hold radios, equipment and property; fine finger dexterity to manipulate apparatus controls, computer keyboard and writing utensils; lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 10 lbs. Frequent walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, climbing, balancing and squatting; bending and twisting at the waist; pushing, pulling and reaching above and below shoulder level; power grasping; walking on uneven ground; driving; lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds from below waist to above shoulder level; lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 lbs. with or without assistance. Occasional running, crawling; lifting and carrying objects and persons weighing more than 100 lbs. with or without assistance. Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, wind, dust, etc.) and in extremely hazardous situations such as, at heights, in confined spaces, at temperature extremes, around crowds, with loud noises, with limited visibility, in the presence of hazardous materials, in the presence of victims of death and/or dismemberment. Candidates must possess a Class C California driver’s license by the date of hire and must have California EMT-B certification with accreditation in San Diego County at the time of hire (San Diego County EMT-B certification must be maintained throughout assignment). Employees hired after 10/28/92 shall be non-smokers and must remain non-smokers throughout their employment. Additionally, employees hired after 7/1/09 shall not smoke or use any tobacco products, either on or off-duty, while employed by the City of Santee.

The applicant(s) selected will be subject to a criminal history investigation through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and a thorough background check. A waiver for reference and background information must be completed. The applicant(s) selected will also be given a conditional offer of employment pending the outcome of a medical evaluation and drug test. Any applicant(s) who tests positive for illegal or non-prescribed medically beneficial drugs will not be hired.

City of Santee employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
