City of San Bernardino is Hiring a Lifeguard (Part-Time) Near San Bernardino, CA

Join the City of San Bernardino as a Lifeguard!

The City of San Bernardino is accepting applications to fill multiple vacancies within in the Aquatics Division of the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department. San Bernardino is home to six public pools and will be offering year-round access for our City residents. This a perfect opportunity for groups of all ages to start their career in a government agency and serve our community.

Promotional Opportunities (Classification Progression): 
This is the entry level position to the Aquatics series of classifications. Growth opportunities are as follows:
Senior Lifeguard
Pool Manager I
Pool Manager II
Aquatics Supervisor
Free Certification Process:
Applicants that do not currently have their Lifeguard Certifications will be invited to receive training and become certified with our Aquatics Staff for free!

Steps: 

1. Submit your application through this portal by selecting the green Apply button.
2. Attend an In-Water Skills Test and an interview (March 11, March 18, April 15, or May 6).
3. Applicants which successfully pass the skills assessment and interview will be issued a conditional job offer and be scheduled to complete their Red Cross Lifeguard Training (must be completed within 45 days of the job offer).
4. Complete all pre-employment exams consisting of a live scan and a physical.
Special Note: Applicants that pass the interview but do not pass the In-Water Skills Test will be considered for a position as a Recreation Aide (Cashier) in the Aquatics Division. To apply to become a Recreation Aide click here.

Friday: 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Provides courteous and expeditious customer service to the general public and City department staffs.
Supervises swimming activities in and around a City pool to ensure that policies, rules and regulations are observed and enforced and that no hazard to safety is created; warns swimmers of improper activities or danger; enforces pool regulations and water safety policies.
Rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning; administers first aid in the event of injury; administers artificial respiration if required.
Assists in cleaning the pool and related facilities, and equipment; and assists in instructing classes in fundamentals of swimming.
Routinely adheres to and maintains a positive attitude towards City and Department goals; and performs other related work as required.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
  1. Lifesaving techniques and rescue methods, water hazards;
  2.  First aid as applied to accidents in water and surrounding area;
  3. Policies, rules and regulations governing swimming pool operation.
Ability to:
  1. Swim with proficiency and endurance for possible rescues;
  2. Evaluate situations and adopt intelligent methods of action;
  3. Remain calm and efficient in stressful situations;
  4. Maintain constant observation of an assigned area and note any sign of impending trouble;
  5. Prevent dangerous situations from arising;
  6. Recognize emergencies and take appropriate action;
  7. Maintain records and prepare reports;
  8. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  9. Effectively instruct persons in the techniques of swimming and water safety;
  10. Follow oral and written instructions;
  11. Transport materials and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds;
  12. See in the normal visual range with or without correction;
  13. Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction;
  14. Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions, including high temperatures, humidity, moisture and distracting noises.
Possession of a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate, YMCA Lifeguard or Ellis and Associates Lifeguard Certificate, Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate or American Red Cross Community First Aid and Safety Certificate or National Safety Council Standard First Aid Certificate or Medic First Aid Certificate
AND
American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certificate or American Heart Association or CPR Level "C" BLS (Basic Life Support) Certificate or American Red Cross Community CPR Certificate are required.
