SUMMARY: Under close supervision, under close supervision, oversees and operates equipment at the City of Roswell Wastewater Treatment Plant to provide water that meets City, State, and Federal quality regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

· Monitors and maintains plant equipment; adjust blowers to maintain desired dissolved oxygen levels; reads and records a variety of meters and flowcharts.

· Operates pumps to maintain sludge levels; check temperature; turn and mix sludge as needed; dispose of trash, grease, and dirt on a regular basis; takes samples as needed; keeps log sheets and maintenance charts.

· Operates a variety of plant related equipment including but not limited to bar screens and Grit Chambers.

· Maintains Wastewater Treatment Plant grounds; mows and edges grass area; collects trash; paints; assists with basic repairs.

· Supports the relationship between the City of Roswell and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training, and Experience:

· Graduation from a standard senior or vocational high school, or the equivalent.

Knowledge Of:

· City and Department policies and procedures.

· EPA regulations and standards.

· Proper use of laboratory equipment, including personal protective equipment.

·

Skill In:

· Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.

· Effective verbal and written communication.

· Maintaining detailed logs and records.

· Reading and interpreting various charts and meters.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess and maintain a valid Class D Driver's License issued by the State of New Mexico and have a satisfactory driving record. Must be actively seeking a Level IV Wastewater Operator's Certificate issued by the State of New Mexico Environment Department.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed throughout the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Requires constant physical efforts, and operation of heavy machinery and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed, including proper use of safety equipment.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

· Must be able to pass a rigid background investigation including work history, criminal records, driving records and other records deemed necessary.

· Must pass a pre-employment limited physical given by a City – designated physician.

· Must pass a pre-employment limited drug screen administered by a City – designated facility.

· Must provide proof of, or obtain within 30 days, immunization against tetanus and diphtheria. If immunized for these over 10 years ago, must have proof of, or obtain, a booster.

CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:

Incumbents and candidates must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and insurability in accordance with the City’s insurance carrier. Must have means of communications for after hours, City related communications. Employee must have the ability to obtain and retain NMED Facilities operator certification.
