City of Roanoke, Virginia is Hiring a Library Assistant I Near Roanoke, VA

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Library Assistant I to perform clerical work in the public library system. Charges and discharges library materials, registers patrons, assists in controlling status of materials in circulation. Maintains files and records. Assists the public in the use of library facilities. Locates books, magazines and other materials as requested. Provides general library information. Examines shelves, replaces incorrectly shelved books. Inspects and repairs library materials. Prepares library materials for circulation. High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one to three months related experience and/or training in a clerical environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

SUMMARY 

Performs clerical work in the public library system. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Charges and discharges library materials, registers patrons, assists in controlling status of materials in circulation 
  • Maintains files and records
  • Assists the public in the use of library facilities
  • Locates books, magazines and other materials as requested
  • Provides general library information
  • Examines shelves, replaces incorrectly shelved books 
  • Inspects and repairs library materials
  • Processes and labels materials for circulation
  • Orders and maintains inventory
  • Prepares library materials for circulation, bindery and withdrawal from library collections
  • Assists staff with Youth and Adult programs
  • Duties as assigned such as security monitoring
  • May require evening and weekend hours of work.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE?

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one to three months related experience and/or training in a clerical environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS 

Ability to read and comprehend instructions. Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

REASONING ABILITY 

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
