COMBINATION INSPECTOR (RESIDENTIAL BUILDING) - Building Inspections (FULL-TIME)
JOB SUMMARY:
Under direction, inspects buildings, construction sites and construction components for compliance with Building, Electrical, Plumbing, or Mechanical codes and laws by making routine field inspections throughout the construction period. Reviews plans for compliance with designated codes and ordinances administered by Building Inspection Division for purpose of issuing permits. Counsel with architects, contractors, owners, and inspection staff as needed. Perform other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Make visual inspections during building construction throughout the city to ensure compliance with laws and regulations and safe construction installations and practices. Walk, kneel, sit, squat, crawl, stand, stoop, jump, leap, climb, and/or twist while performing inspection duties. Effectively interpret building and other appropriate codes and regulations and advise on inquiries relating to construction installations and materials. Review plans for compliance with codes and ordinances administered by Building Inspection Division. Keep effective records of permits, plan reviews and inspections. Investigate complaints and issue court citations for violations when necessary. Attend court cases where violations have been filed. Counsel with architects, designers, builders, and owners concerning building code and zoning regulations. Communicate courteously and effectively with other city employees, officials, contractors, and the public. Use computer for word processing and record keeping.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assist and advise other inspectors as necessary.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSES:
High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university preferred. Certifications as an ICC Residential Building Inspector and Energy Inspector. ICC Certification as a Mechanical Inspector or TSBPE Certification as a Plumbing Inspector must be obtained within one year of employment. Texas driver’s license, Class C required.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:
Experience preferred in residential building and energy inspections, general building contracting and construction. Must have knowledge of pertinent construction codes and ordinances. Must have ability to operate personal computers and have working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Must have abilities to: comprehend rapidly; read, write, and communicate effectively in person and by telephone with the public in the English language; establish and maintain effective working relationships; and communicate courteously with other city employees, officials, contractors, and the public.
