City Of Rialto is Hiring a Facility Maintenance Assistant Near Rialto, CA

DEFINITION

To perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled in support of the repair and maintenance of City buildings and facilities; to perform a variety of unskilled to semi-skilled building trade duties including carpentry, painting and minor electrical work; to maintain and operate tools, equipment and vehicles; and to perform a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry level class in the Facility Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Facility Maintenance Technician by the performance of more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. Since this class is typically an entry level class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from higher level management or supervisory staff.

ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS--Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

1. Performs routine repair and maintenance duties to City buildings and facilities; performs a variety of semi-skilled building trade duties including routine plumbing, swimming pool maintenance, painting, furniture and equipment moving, lock installation, and minor electrical work.

2. Performs a variety of custodial, cleaning, and basic maintenance and repair duties at City buildings, facilities, and adjacent grounds.

3. Assists in the repair and general minor maintenance duties inside and outside of buildings; paints inside and outside of buildings.

4. Repairs and replaces a variety of plumbing fixtures and fittings including valves, gauges, pressure regulators, sinks, fountains, faucets and related devices; and opens clogged drains.

5. Performs minor maintenance duties and makes minor repairs to equipment; and troubleshoots for any other repairs that are needed.

6. Performs minor landscaping duties at City buildings, facilities, and adjacent grounds; rakes, pulls weeds, and does periodic planting in flower beds and other landscaped areas; prunes and trims bushes and small trees.

7. Maintains and repairs interior and exterior lighting systems; replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes as needed.

8. Performs a variety of carpentry duties on city facilities; assembles furniture; repairs desks, shelving units, and related furniture and components.

9. Delivers and picks up materials, supplies, and equipment from vendors and various City offices.

10. Maintains and operates a variety of tools, equipment, and vehicles in a safe and efficient manner.

11. Prepares and maintains records and logs of work performed.

12. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Knowledge of:

Principles and procedures of semi-skilled building maintenance trades including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and related trades.

Applicable building codes and ordinances.

Operational characteristics of tools and equipment used in maintenance activities.

Basic mathematical principles.

Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.

Ability to:

Perform semi-skilled building maintenance mechanical duties in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and related trade areas.

Operate and maintain building maintenance tools, equipment and vehicles in a safe and effective manner.

Work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches.

Maintain files and records.

Work independently in the absence of supervision.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others.

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, writing and operating assigned equipment.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES Minimum requirements as a condition of hire:

Experience: 

One year of experience working in a related field.

Training: 

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. 

License or Certificate:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.

Selection Process: 

Candidates must clearly demonstrate through their application material that they meet the employment standards outlined above. All properly completed applications will be reviewed, and the most appropriately qualified individuals will be invited to continue in the selection process. Examinations for the positions may consist of any combination of written, performance, and oral exams to evaluate the applicant's skills, training, and experience for the position. Successful applicants will be placed on an eligibility list. The City may also merge lists. The selected candidate(s) must successfully complete pre-employment clearances which may include a physical, drug screen, and fingerprinting. 

Veterans Preference Credit Eligibility:

Veterans of the armed forces, who have been discharged or released from active duty under conditions other than dishonorable (Government Code: 18540.4), shall receive an additional five (5) points to their final examination score for ranking purposes only. This preference will apply only to the first appointment to any regular full-time City appointment. A copy of your valid DD214 must be submitted on or before the final filing date in order to be eligible for Veterans Preference Credit.
