Voluntary Demotion Opportunities are Available to Current City of Reno Classified Employees Only
If you are not currently employed with the City of Reno or if you are employed in a temporary, part-time, grant-funded or otherwise non-Civil Service position, this application does not apply to you; however, we encourage you to check out our website/other for employment opportunities within the City of Reno. 

Voluntary Demotion List: Voluntary Demotions may be made to a lower-paying job classiication.

  • You may be placed on a voluntary demotion list if you meet one of the following requirements:
    1. You held the classification with the City previously; or
    2. You meet the minimum requirements for the classification.
Applicable Civil Service Rule:
RULE IX. DEMOTION
Section 4. Voluntary Demotion.
A classified employee, upon their own initiative, may request reduction to a vacancy in a previously held classification or any lower classification for which the employee may be qualified within the classified service. Such reduction shall be without prejudice to the employee’s future status and the employee shall be entitled to credit for previous service in the lower classification and the higher classification, only when the higher classification is in the direct line of progression. PROVIDED: Such reduction shall not displace any confirmed or probationary classified employee.
Important Voluntary Demotion Details:
  • If you voluntarily demote to a classification you have not previously held, your classification seniority start over.
  • If you voluntarily demote to a classification you have previously held, you will be given credit for your previous time earned. 
  •  If you voluntarily demote to a classification you have previously held from a higher classification in the direct line of progression, you will be given credit for your previous time earned plus your time earned in the higher classification. 
  • If you change departments, your current departmental seniority does not count in your new department.
