City of Puyallup is Hiring a Seasonal Parks Maintenance Worker I Near Puyallup, WA

The city anticipates hiring immediately for multiple seasonal maintenance positions. Come join our great Parks Maintenance team!

There are seasonal Parks maintenance position openings, each lasting approximately three to six months, to assist with increased workloads. Specific beginning and ending dates of employment may be flexible. 
The City of Puyallup is a community of 43,000 and is situated at the foot of scenic Mount Rainier. The city is known as a regional commercial center, and serves its residents and neighbors with a strong, diversified economy. Our employees live in and support a community that has excellent schools, city library, amazing parks and recreational activities, and a vibrant downtown with a variety of restaurants and retail establishments.
Positions perform a variety of manual labor activities in the Parks and Cemetery areas and at parks facilities. Activities include (but are not limited to) maintaining and watering plants, weed control, mowing, litter and trash collection, restroom cleaning, ball field preparation and maintenance, interior and exterior painting, minor plumbing, other repairs, and maintenance activities as assigned. These positions will work in highly visible areas involving frequent interaction with the public, requiring positive and proactive communication and customer service skills. 
 
Work will be accomplished with some supervision; the day-to-day work plan will be established by the lead person and/or Parks Supervisor.
Knowledge of:
  • Grounds maintenance practices, including knowledge of the proper operations of and safety practices related to landscaping power and hand tools; and
  • Minimum one-year work experience in horticulture, landscaping or building and grounds maintenance preferred, or any combination of experience, education and training which would provide the level of knowledge, skills, and abilities required.
Ability to:
  • Operate equipment safely and effectively;
  • Demonstrate physical strength and agility to perform the work in a safe manner with normal vision, depth perception and eye/hand coordination;
  • Be self-motivated with the ability to listen and follow specific directions;
  • Establish positive, effective working relationships with others, including the public;
  • Work in a variety of weather conditions, including inclement weather;
  • Work with limited supervision and clearly communicate daily accomplishments to lead person and/or supervisor;
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance during scheduled work hours at assigned work sites;
  • Wear and maintain safety clothing and/or equipment as assigned and in accordance with training standards;
  • Be responsible and safe when using City vehicles, tools and equipment; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience: 
Graduation from high school, GED, vocational/technical school or equivalent preferred. Experience performing a broad range of maintenance and construction desirable. Any combination of experience, education and training which would provide the level of knowledge, skills and abilities required.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be at least age 18 at time of application to operate maintenance equipment.
  • Possession of a valid Washington State driver's license at time of hire. 
Constant Demands: Hearing (working in right-of-way areas), and seeing.
Frequent Demands: Standing, walking, lifting an average of 25 pounds, carrying, bending/twisting at the waist, crouching, kneeling/squatting, reaching (below knees, knees to shoulder, above shoulder), and handling/grasping.
Occasional Demands: Sitting, driving, lifting a maximum of 75 pounds, carrying hoses, plants and tools, climbing uneven terrain, pushing/pulling hoses, climbing stairs and ladders, working at heights/balancing, crawling while planting, repetitive arm motion while pruning, fine finger manipulation, and foot controls.
Environmental Factors: Moderate noise levels; below normal temperatures are part of the job; and 90 percent of time spent outdoors each day in various weather conditions.
 
SELECTION PROCESS
Those applicants whose qualifications most closely correspond to the City's current needs will be contacted for interviews and/or testing. The appointing authority may conduct second interviews.

Candidates invited to interview must provide a 5-Year Employment Driving Record Abstract. Having a good driving record to operate machinery and vehicles is a condition of employment for these positions. Abstracts can be purchased at Department of Licensing.
 
Notification – Following submission of application, an email acknowledgment receipt of application is given. Persons selected for an interview and/or testing will be notified by email, normally within 15 working days following the closing date on the job announcement.
Not Selected – No formal notification is usually sent by the City to applicants not selected for an interview or test. Should the same or another position open for which the applicant wishes to apply, he/she must apply online for each new opening.
GENERAL INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS

Union Affiliation – These are seasonal Teamster Local No. 313 bargaining unit positions and are not eligible to receive any benefits except as provided by State law. 
Hours Of Work – Work schedules will vary and will be discussed during interview. 
FLSA Status - These are FLSA non-exempt positions.
Protective Clothing and Equipment: As determined by the City, the City will provide and the employee shall use and maintain all protective clothing and equipment that may be required by applicable laws and regulations. Steel-toed footwear shall be purchased by the employee.
Temporary, seasonal and non-benefit employment: 
Employees may be hired to fill various temporary, seasonal and non-benefit positions within the City as approved in the current budget. Temporary, seasonal and non-benefit employees may be terminated at any time for any reason without recourse.
