City of Puyallup is Hiring a Library Shelver (Part-Time) Near Puyallup, WA

The City of Puyallup is hiring for a part-time Library Shelver. The position will be scheduled for 10 hours per week.

The successful candidate will perform the primary responsibility of shelving library materials and assisting with related duties in the efficient operation of the Puyallup Public Library.
 
The preferred schedule would be closing shift Wednesday and Thursday (until 7:10) and either Friday or Saturday (until 5:10), with two shifts three hours and one shift four hours. The work schedule will be discussed during interviews and will be finalized upon input of the finalist. The hours per week may be increased up to 20 hours per week at a future date. This position may work any hours the library is staffed and schedules may be adjusted for operational necessity.

  • Places materials on shelves in numerical and/or alphabetical order (shelving);
  • Sorts materials for shelving;
  • Verifies accuracy of materials' placement (shelf-reading);
  • Checks in and performs property stamping on newspapers and magazines;
  • Uses computers for basic functions such as email and checking in materials; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • General Public Library practices.

  • Perform detailed routine procedures accurately, under pressure with interruptions;
  • Maintain productive and harmonious working relationships with library staff;
  • Relate positively to the direction given by supervisors;
  • Follow through and complete projects/tasks as assigned;
  • Read and communicate with others in English orally and in writing;
  • Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with customers; and
  • Maintain regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
Education and Experience:
A combination of education, experience, and training that indicates the ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position listed above.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be sixteen years of age or older;
  • Must provide own transportation to library to meet scheduling needs;
  • Must provide a telephone number to be contacted regarding scheduling, emergencies, etc;
  • Successful candidates(s) must comply with a background check required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act, RCW 43.43.840.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Prior library work experience is desirable;
  • Ability to communicate in other languages (especially Spanish) is a plus.
Constant Demands – Constant use of sight and hearing abilities to perform essential functions and communicate with others. Constant fine finger manipulation and use of hands and arms in reaching/handling/fingering/grasping while handling library materials. Pushing/pulling (moving book trucks and bins); reaching-knees to shoulders (putting books on book trucks, removing books from bin); handling/grasping (books and other library materials); foot control (moving book trucks and bin), and seeing.
Frequent Demands – Frequent bending/twisting at waist/knees/neck while reaching to shelve library materials, working at desk, worktable, or moving from sitting to standing position. Frequent standing in combination with walking throughout work shift in library areas; standing may be extended at times. Frequent lifting/carrying up to 30 pound library materials, file boxes, etc. Frequent pushing/pulling force up to 40 pounds while moving book trucks and bins. Daily use of computers.
Occasional Demands – Occasional use of speech to communicate with others. Occasional crouching and crawling while putting books on lower shelves. Occasional climbing on step stools, ladders and stairs.
Works Primarily: Indoors in a library environment.
