Nature of Work

This is recreational and limited supervisory work overseeing and assisting with swimming and other aquatic related activities located in a community recreation center. Activities associates with the job include greeting and assisting visitors, overseeing and assisting with supervising children and adults in the swimming pools and surrounding areas and providing general information about recreational programs, rules and facilities. Additional activities include ensuring the proper cleaning of the pool and related facilities, teaching swimming classes, monitoring pool chemicals and providing emergency life saving services to swimmers when necessary. Job responsibilities require considerable experience working in a community recreation facility with aquatic facilities, considerable knowledge of water safety rules and lifesaving practices, methods and techniques, sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job, knowledge of the cleaning and maintenance requirements of large public pools and good organizational, interpersonal and decision making skills. Job performance is evaluated by the Aquatics Manager through review of supervisory capabilities, adherence to community center rules and regulations, expertise in lifesaving techniques and practices, level of support provided for recreational activities, dependability in performing job assignments and organizational, interpersonal and decision making skills.

Illustrative Examples of Work

  • Greets and assists visitors and patrons participating in community center events and activities.
  • Oversees and assists with enrolling aquatic program participants and receiving, recording and accounting for fees and other charges.
  • Observes the actions of swimmers, maintains discipline and enforces water safety and pool rules.
  • Teaches swimming lessons, offers stroke and techniques advise when requested and teaches water aerobics classes.
  • Ensures the constant vigilance of all swimmers and other patrons utilizing the aquatic facilities and addresses inappropriate and/or unsafe behaviors in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Provides emergency lifesaving techniques to swimmers in need and provides appropriate lifesaving procedures as required.
  • Oversees and assists with cleaning the pool and related facilities on a regular schedule and testing pool chemicals.
  • Assists with opening and closing the swimming facility.
  • Ensures that the pool and pool decks are clean and brushes and vacuums the pool when necessary.
  • Notifies the appropriate personnel in the event of emergency situations, discipline problems, malfunctioning equipment, etc.
  • Explains the rules and regulations required to use the aquatic facilities and/or participate in programs and activities.
  • Provides swimming lessons, CPR and First Aid training.
  • Performs related duties as required.


Necessary Requirements of Work

Graduation from an accredited high school supplemented with additional training and experience in supervising aquatic center recreational activities; considerable knowledge of recreational facilities and swimming pool operations; considerable knowledge of water safety rules and life saving and first aid practices and techniques; considerable knowledge of cleaning and maintenance requirements for large municipal pools; supervisory experience; sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job; good interpersonal, organizational and decision making skills; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience to provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

  • Considerable knowledge of water safety rules, life saving and first aid practices and techniques.
  • Considerable knowledge of swimming strokes and techniques for all recognized swimming strokes.
  • Considerable knowledge of the maintenance and cleaning requirements of large municipal swimming pools including chemical testing and application procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of the proper handling and disposal of bodily fluids including the use of universal precautions.
  • Considerable knowledge of recreational facilities operating rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of water aerobics teaching programs and techniques.
  • Knowledge of the fees and other related charges for participating in recreational activities and events.
  • Knowledge of basic supervisory practices including monitoring of job performance, addressing performance deficiencies and taking appropriate corrective actions.
  • Ability to effectively monitor and observe the activities of individuals participating in recreational activities, swimming programs and classes, etc.
  • Ability to conduct informative and effective swimming and water aerobics classes.
  • Ability to respond in a prompt and proper manner to individuals experiencing distress in the swimming facilities.
  • Ability to effectively perform the proper lifesaving techniques in the event of emergency situations experience by program participants.
  • Ability to interact with participants in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to ensure consistent adherence to all established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and direct the activities of assigned staff.
  • Ability to enforce operational policies and rules in a diplomatic and impartial manner.
  • Skill in swimming, water rescue techniques and administering CPR and first aid.

Physical Requirements

  • This is medium work requiring exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently
  • Sudden bursts of energy requiring excessive force may be require for emergency rescue operations
  • The position requires considerable physical activity including walking, lifting, reaching, stooping, pulling, pulling, grasping, balancing, climbing, kneeling, standing and crouching
  • The worker is subject to inside and outside activities with no effective protection from weather changes
  • Visual acuity is required to monitor pool activities and conduct of swimmers
  • Work requires hearing sufficient to accurately perceive information a normal spoken word levels
  • Vocal communications for expressing and exchanging ideas and commands by means of the spoken word.

Necessary Special Requirements

  • Possession of Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Possession of an AED certification.
