JOB DESCRIPTION

General Statement of Duties
Under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, the Theater Director is responsible for the practical and creative interpretation of a dramatic script and musical score. Also be involved in the whole process from the design and pre-production stages, right through the final performance. General and specific assignments are received and are usually under little direct supervision allowing latitude for use of independent judgement.
Essential Functions
The primary duties for the incumbent include:

  • Maintain regular, reliable, and prompt attendance, physically present to work.
  • Hold auditions for production;
  • Programming and budgeting;
  • Handles all complaints, settling disputes, and resolving grievances and conflicts or otherwise negotiate with others;
  • Maintain safety for the general public and staff.
  • Instructs and demonstrates skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team achievement;
  • Instruct class sizes of approximately 60 to 100 participants;
  • Assigns duties to all staff and volunteers under his/her jurisdiction
  • Required to administer extreme caution and safety while conducting theater duties;
  • Develops appropriate training programs and rehearsal schedules;
  • Ensures that medical and safety requirements are adhered to;
  • Completes injury and incident report for any participant injured within 24 hours ( even if a participant does not see physician);
  • Adheres to all financial policies of the City in regards to the collection and disbursement of money, expenses, and receipts;
  • Must verify that all participants have paid their fees and are officially enrolled and documented in the class roster;
  • Makes recommendations regarding the purchase of costumes, equipment and supplies;
  • Enforces discipline policies and emphasizes sportsmanship and healthy lifestyles;
  • Professionally represents the Department and the City in interactions with participants, parents, community, and staff;
  • Will perform other related duties that is required and assigned.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position supervises volunteers and recreation aides.
Physical Demands
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact and normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls, Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of theater related equipment,. Some significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling reaching, crawling, and handling, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 -50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
High School Diploma or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED);
Must possess a valid (Class C) Texas Driver’s License and have an acceptable driving record.
Must pass screening and background check;
At least two years related experience;
Prior successful experience working in a school setting or coaching student athletes strongly preferred.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge -Knowledge of safety hazards and necessary safety precautions sufficiently enough to be able to establish a safe environment for participants and staff. Knowledge of basic fundamentals and techniques of creative and performing arts to be able to perform a variety of duties related to the work assignment. Knowledge of inventory techniques sufficiently able to maintain an adequate level of supplies. Knowledge of the techniques, principles and regulations of children’s theatre. Knowledge of lead work principles, rehearsal practices and being able to sufficiently establish priorities, assign review work and resolve problems.
Abilities – Develop and administer theatre experience in acting, stage management and direction suited to the needs of the community; Plan, organize, coordinate, and direct the development and implementation of theatre art; Analyze, interpret, and explain section policies and procedures; supervise and train program participants; Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the working environment and with those contacted in the course of work.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a part-time, non-exempt, seasonal position, with a 19-hour work week. Incumbent must have the ability to work flexible hours including holidays, evenings, and weekends, if needed. Participation in City sponsored special events, trainings, or meetings may be required.
