What you'll be doing:

This position is responsible for the administration and management of Parks & Recreation programs and activities; supervises assigned personnel. Reports to the Parks & Recreation Director.

Essential Job Functions

  • Plans, develops, organizes, implements, evaluates and supervises camp activities, youth and teen recreation programs, senior programs, special events, and athletic activities.
  • Advertises the programs in local publications.
  • Sets up registration procedures and forms.
  • Ensures that procedures are followed and fees are collected.
  • Implements and administers the departmental budget and presents budget recommendations to the Parks and Recreation Director.
  • Supervises all programs and activities in the Parks & Recreation Department.
  • Selects, trains and develops Parks & Recreation personnel and evaluates their performance.
  • Apprises management of all aspects of activities and any problems that might arise.
  • Prepares reports as directed.
  • Requisitions materials and supplies.
  • Evaluates programs and activities.
  • Ensures safety of facility and parks; works closely with Public Works personnel on work orders and facility needs.
  • Manages and maintains recreation software (RecTrac); trains staff.
  • Assists in the development of special events.
  • Ensures department policies, procedures, and City ordinances are followed.
  • Conducts performance evaluations.
  • Conducts interviews and makes hiring recommendations.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • Monitors trends with the Recreation field.
  • Works with Parks and Recreation volunteers.
  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of work experience in the field of Recreation.
  • Must be certified in CPR, First Aid, and AED.
  • Must possess FEMA 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800 certifications, or the ability to obtain within first six (6) months of employment.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge in the theories of youth recreation activities and their application to community needs.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of administration, budget, staff development and personnel management.
  • Knowledge of supervisory, management and leadership principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of the occupational safety rules and regulations governing play grounds or other facilities and the necessary precautionary measures.
  • Skill in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Skill in using computers for data entry.
  • Skill in using computers for word processing and accounting purposes.
  • Ability to plan, organize and direct the activities of personnel.
  • Ability to provide supervision, training, and evaluation to staff.
  • Ability to assess and provide suitable programs based upon the needs of the participants.
  • Ability to prepare, and present a budget and to monitor expenditures.
  • Ability to change planned activities in a moment’s notice.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Work environment is typically performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity and responsiveness to changes that include goals, priorities, and needs of the organization and position.
  • The work is medium and requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
