CITY OF PAPILLION is Hiring a Special Transportation Bus Driver Near Papillion, NE

POSITION TITLE: Special Services Bus Driver

REPORTS TO: 55 Club Manager / Recreation Director

SUPERVISES: ----------

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the city’s special services vehicle in the transportation of individuals to and from various destinations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Operates the special services vehicle on a designated schedule and in all types of weather conditions, including but not limited to rain, snow, and ice.

 Operates various tools and equipment in the performance of job duties, including but not limited to simple hand tools, cellular phones, washing equipment, and vacuum cleaners used in the general upkeep of the vehicle.

Performs general upkeep of the special services vehicle through a variety of duties including but not limited to cleaning and sanitizing the interior and exterior of the vehicle; informs the 55 Club Manager and/or Recreation Director of any necessary repairs and maintenance needed on the special services vehicle. 

Ensures that passengers are safely secured on the special services vehicle by assisting with seatbelts, the wheel chair lift and restraining devices, etc.; maintains order on vehicle at all times.

Physically assists clients as needed in various situations such as boarding and exiting the vehicle, assisting with packages and personal mobility equipment, and assisting a client if they stumble or fall.

Receives calls from clients regarding their travel requests, arranges for pick up times and destinations, and determines appropriate time frame for routes and travel schedules.

Prepares and maintains various records including but not limited to client usage logs indicating client name and address, vehicle check off lists indicating mileage, gas usage and maintenance performed.

Collects fares from passengers, issues passenger tickets and provides change when needed; serves as cashier by maintaining cash drawer on the vehicle.

Receives citizen complaints and refers individuals to appropriate city official or employee for resolution, as needed.

Establishes and maintains positive public relations with the general public, passengers, other employees, other governmental agencies and municipal officials.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY:

Knowledge of and ability to obey traffic laws and regulations and use defensive driving techniques in all weather conditions at all times. Knowledge of and ability to contact sources of assistance in the event of a medical or other emergency.

Knowledge of and ability to utilize proper telephone etiquette.

Knowledge and ability to perform accurate mathematical calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, using a calculator or manually.

Ability to learn to operate a variety of vehicles, tools and equipment required in the performance of duties including but not limited to the city’s special services vehicle, wheel chair lift, cleaning and washing equipment, and a smart phone, GPS Maps etc., in a safe and efficient manner.

Ability to learn and apply city policies when dealing with inquiries from the general public.

Ability to perform job duties efficiently while managing frequent interruptions. 

Ability to learn the street locations in selected Sarpy and DouglasCounty areas, including alternative routes in the event of road construction or emergency.

Ability to estimate time requirements and follow a designated riding schedule in a safe and timely fashion.

Ability to maintain regular and dependable attendance on the job, including attendance and job performance for possibly prolonged periods of time when called out on short notice due to weather conditions, emergencies and similar situations of public necessity.

Ability to plan and organize a personal work schedule, set priorities and meet deadlines.

Ability to effectively deal with elderly and the physically/mentally challenged clients in a patient, tactful and courteous manner.

Ability to maintain complete and accurate records.

Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.

Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, in English.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, other employees, and municipal officials.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES:

1. Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of hire.

2. Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.

3. Must be able to obtain a CPR and AED certification, within a time frame established by the employer. Must maintain certification as required.

4. Must be bondable.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

The work environment is generally in outside weather conditions, with the employee occasionally being exposed to wet/humid conditions, including snow and ice, and to extreme temperatures.

The employee is frequently required to walk, sit, talk, and hear and must have the ability to transport themselves to and from various locations within the city. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate the vehicles.

The employee is constantly required to get in and out of the vehicle, to reach with hands and arms, and to use hands to finger, handle, operate or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is required to climb or balance, stoop, or kneel, and must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and/or move objects or persons without assistance when needed to assist clients. Work hours may occasionally be required in times of darkness. The noise level in the work environment ranges from quiet to moderately loud. 

Work may be stressful due to the driving in traffic, working within specific time frames and a great deal of interaction with the general public, the elderly and the physically/mentally challenged.
