City of North Port, FL is Hiring a Lifeguard II Near North Port, FL

General Description

This is a full-time position responsible for a safe and positive pool environment by preventing and responding to emergencies and performing proper rescue and first aid. The position also assists with cleaning and maintenance of the aquatic facility and surrounding area.

Essential Job Functions

  • Acts as lead guard to support seasonal staff.
  • Ensures Daily tasks are completed on rotations.
  • Leads seasonal staff in policy compliance and modeling of professional lifeguard standards
  • Assists with maintaining a safe aquatic facility including providing real time feedback and noting suggestions and comments for supervisor's review.
  • Follows direction from Head Lifeguard, or designee, regarding placement and rotations during shift to ensure efficient guarding and safety.
  • Assist with training / orientation of other Lifeguards, provides swim instruction or similar classes to public.
  • Responsible for guarding and safety of participants within all aquatic facilities, administer first aid and life saving measures per industry standards.
  • Completes housekeeping, general maintenance tasks and logs data/ creates reports as directed.
  • Model standards and expectations throughout shift.
  • Responsible for post until relieved by another guard.
  • Quick action to any potential emergency situation.
  • Attend regular in-service trainings and other trainings and meetings as they are held.
  • Support and participation in special events.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Must be able to swim at least 500 yards.
  • Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere in the zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize swimmers in need of assistance.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize, respond and remedy unsafe situations.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and ages.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model and provide constructive feedback.

Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is preferred.
  • Two (2) years of paid lifeguard experience or previous lifeguard supervisory experience required.
(A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Current nationally accredited lifeguard certification (applicable for body of water being guarded).
  • Current Basic Life Support and First Aid certifications.
  • Ability to obtain ARC WSI within 6 months of hire.

Sick Leave and Vacation Leave

Part time employees accrue hours based on the average number of regular hours worked per year.
ICMA-RC - Deferred Compensation Plans

The City offers eligible employees the opportunity to enroll in a deferred retirement plan. The money that is deducted from your paycheck each payroll is put into this account and is tax deferred at the end of the year. One-on-one meetings with each company are held quarterly so employees can speak with the representative confidentially on preparing for their retirement. This is a voluntary program.
Florida Retirement System – FRS

Eligible employees are enrolled in the Florida Retirement System with an 8 year vesting period. Employees contribute 3% of their gross earnings per payroll.
Cigna – Employee Assistance Program

The City offers this program to all employees. This is a confidential counseling program for employees and their families. The City pays for 3 visits and if you choose to continue, you would use the specialist co-pay on your insurance plan. Counseling can include stress, alcoholism, family problems, marriage difficulties, financial trouble, depression, work/life and more.
VPI - Veterinary Pet Insurance
The City offers Pet Insurance as a voluntary benefit. This is not payroll deducted.
